Wiper Cowl
Anyone built/fabbed any solutions or are there any post market options for that piece of plastic that acts as our wiper cowl?
|
what are you trying to achieve? just curious

Well, mainly to just replace the OEM wiper/plastic. I screwed up and took the thing out, which is evidently a no-no on our car for venting the engine bay. The muscle cars do this for an induction effect, but on our car it will actually slow the car down and since our CAI's are in the front, there is zero gain to be had from removing that thing. So instead of replace it with OEM part, I was wondering if any of the carbon fiber shops have this item.
The other option is to fabricate one like on a real race car, although most people when they make a "wiper box" as some refer to it will just remove their wipers as well. I had thought about having someone fab one to work with the wipers, but was wondering if anyone had already designed one. It sure doesn't seem so, I have looked at all the usual suspects for carbon fiber goodies. |
yea i havent seen anything aftermarket for it. the piece is so light anyway!

Not so much weight concern, but the aero on it could definitely be improved. Would be nice if it actually covered the wiper blades, or at least sort of came up flush to them or didn't allow them to be completely exposed. Sort of surprised no one has this item. If you look at most track/races cars, this is usually a piece that is fabricated to make the hood and the front windshield flow a bit smoother. Sort of surprised that there is no post market option that is sort of in between full race car, and the OEM thing. Pretty common part for mustangs, American muscle, etc. a lot of trucks use them as well to help improve that area.
With the part not there, air actually travels into the engine bay, this is a good thing if you have one of those circular exposed air intakes like you see on old Camaros etc. for us it just slows us down so we want that whole area to be sealed off and allow no air in. The oem design basically accomplishes that, but leaves a lot to be desired-namely that 5 inch gap between the cowel, the edge of the hood, the wipers, and the windshield. Something like this: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=...1WA&ajaxhist=0 |
The empty area over the cowl isn't hurting anything, it's just a stagnant bubble of air and main airflow goes right over it, surely with no effect.

I agree the design of cowl is not hurting any aerodynamic properties of the vehicle. But I am definitely interested in a different design. I really don't like the grid look, and the idea of covering up the pivot point of the windshield wipers is dynamite.

Yeah I mean a Bolton, that is at least visually a little better, and aero wise a trade off between full race car, and someone that wants a visual improvement and a little better aero is a good product. The oem design is functionally ok, visually it sucks, and in terms of aero, it is probably not a problem but its not doing much good either. Just really surprised I can buy 30 different wiper cowels for my mustang or jeep but there is not a single option out there for the z :|
