ETC Disable?

There's a thread on changing or disabling the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) settings in the Tuning section, but I'm curious to hear about people's experience from a racing perspective.

I autocross and in that setting throttle control and response are critical. One behavior the car has I'd like to get rid off, is the "rev hang", or delayed throttle closure, upon lifting. Nobody I've talked to seems to think it can be tuned out, but there seems to be a chance it can be eliminated if ETC is disabled completely.

Have no problems with how the car behaves when I push the gas, just when I lift.

As ETC disable is a global setting, I can't have it done in only one "map", and doing so also breaks cruise control and synchro rev match, but I'm ok with that.

I'd love to hear stories from those who have progressed in their race car builds, and what they felt and observed when they took the step of removing ETC (or perhaps switched over to an aftermarket ECU). Uprev states doing so is risky, and something like "makes smooth throttle control difficult, even in a racing situation" - but I'm not sure what they mean by that, and if it's just some kind of CYA.

Any input from those that have made the switch is much appreciated.

I honestly don't know anyone at the track that has ever mentioned it or done, so it must not be that important /shrug. That being said, most guys that get serious and do an engine build/tune end up going post market ecu and dumping the VVEL altogether. Which is kind of sad/disappoint. I wish there was some sort of factory ECU flash support/after market Cams, anything that would make the 370 a bit more competitive in that regards. As is, the only solution is to dump the VVEL. Unless you are going to do a full N/A build, imo the money spent on tuning/all the breather mods/ etc is a complete crap waste of money to gain an xtra 10 HP. There's better ways to make the car faster for the money.

It will disable downshift rev match and allegedly can make the throttle overly touchy.

If you have the 7AT it will make shifts "clunky" and (theoretically) will put more wear and tear on the clutch packs.

You might be better off playing with the throttle maps to get the responsiveness just right.

Had the tuner turn it off - drove around on the street a while, I couldn't tell a difference on throttle applicaiton - but the lift throttle behavior (what I was looking to change) - got worse! I could actually see the RPM CLIMB after a quick lift. Car really doesn't like the throttles being closed quickly...
Turned it back on.
