Default Tires -- narrow RE11 OR wide Pilot Super Sport?

I have been running RE-11's to all autox events this year. I also have new set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport's which I'm considering running but I wanted to get some opinions before the Match Tour this weekend.

I know the RE11s are supposed to have more grip, but with the size difference, will I even notice much?

Current autox rims: (from base model 370z, rim narrower than stock)
RE-11 (200 treadwear, running low on tread)
FR: 18x8 - 245/40R18
RR: 18x9 - 275/35R18
VS

My stock rims: (from sport package 370z)
Michelin Pilot Super Sport (300 treadwear, new 0 miles)
FR: 19x9 - 255/40R19
RR: 19x10 - 285/35R19
What do you guys think? Maybe I just need to switch em and test it.

I am under the impression the RE-11 runs a little wide and they definitely have stiffer sidewalls. You might have to run so much pressure in the PSS to keep them from rolling over on the sidewalls, that they have much less grip than the RE-11.

Honestly I'm interested to see what kind of feedback you get from people on this, because I think the PSS is nice and light and grippy as a road tire and will probably last more miles but the RE-11 is a bad-*** grip machine, although an older design.

Or yeah... Test it... Go on...

My experience is that RE-11s run narrow. I ran them for half an autox season 3 years ago. They are by far the best wearing tires in comparison to the Rivals, R-S3s, and RE-71Rs I've destroyed. However, the others have them beat in terms of grip.

I don't think 10mm of extra rubber will even come close to compensating for the RE-11's superior grip.

Thanks. I'll throw them on tomorrow and see how it goes.

I just noticed that the RE-11'S are low on tread. The tread depth isn't an issue on dry pavement, but if the compound has heat cycled out, they may no longer have superior grip.

I have picked up almost two seconds on a 60 second course when going from old heat-cycled tires to a fresh set of identical ones.

So the size difference shouldn't be enough to put the PSS in front, but heat cycles may put the RE-11's back.

I know someone that rolled PSS sidewall on the Dragon. They're not meant for track abuse. RE-11s on the other hand are designed to be a trackable street tire.

Now if you're comparing used RE-11s to brand new PSS, then the comparison might be closer. But I'm still going to say that the RE-11s will give you a much better track experience than PSS.

are you referencing me? lol because yea that def happened.

I then switched to 265/305 RE-11s on my OEM sport wheels and love them. so much grip. just now with tread just barely above the wear bar the RE-11s slip when leaving a stopped position hard.

actually ordering my next set today for zdayz and dragon runs.

I'm on 275 RE-71R square right now. Looking forward to how they react at the Match Tour this weekend. I've run 285 square twice with RE-11s and R-S3s. 285s are pretty happy on the front 9in, and the rear 10in is obviously no problem. In between those two tire options, I ran 295 square Rivals. 295 up front was pretty fat, and with no camber, killed the shoulders after just one Match Tour at Wilmington. I'm interested to see how the Rival-S fairs for others.

I put my stock wheels back on with the pilot super sports and tested it tonight. They felt pretty grippy compared to what I was expecting. I think they actually would out corner the re11 since the PSS's are new. The re11s have some highway miles--not sure if that could affect anything. So for this weekend I'll be running the PSS's. I guess I'll see you there. Are you running in street?

Handling-wise, is there benefit to running a smaller sidewall only in the front so the car points downward some?
