How about a real time chat?

Any chance of a real time chat function? Some of the other websites I visit have it and it can be a lot of fun for the regulars.

I am very sorry to say this but I don't think The370Z will ever have a chat room :(. It just doesn't attract any positive vibe to me. The last thing I want a new members(when they sign up) to see is current members talking about mindless/useless talks. I watch many enthusiast BMW, Porshe, Audi forums and none of them have chat. While, when I go to some Scion, civic or the eclipse forums, they are gladly chatting their life away on the front page. Some of the topics in chat were so embarrassing/inappropriate, I had to leave the page/forum. It just didn't seem like a mature thing to do. I think you guys can see where I'm going with this.

We, as a The370Z forum members, would like to keep a very professional image. I think you've already noticed The370Z.com is a different kind of forum. We are here to provide our fellow members as much as solid information possible with least amount of bs/drama. For your entertainment, I have an "off topic" section where you're more than welcome to create a "The370Z Chat Thread" or use our existing "useless thread".

Thank you guys for understanding.

yup chats only appropriate for civic scion eclipse and GT-R owners :shakes head: :ughdance:

but yea i actually see where AK is coming from.... the 370z is a very mainstream car thats gonna attract a major following....and the way this forum is growing i could see it maybe opening up some doors for a site like this getting side tracked with either flame wars or random ramblings from so many people.... you guys are on your way to 5K and 10K members MYGTR because of the nature of the car is always going to be a smaller more "niche" forum so its more manageable over there....i think thats what AK is getting at or alteast how i interpreted it

if i was running this site i would only consider it appearing in the off topic forum and not the main page for the reasons AK mentioned

i chose to add it to MYGTR because im going for a different angle. as some of you know i CO Founded the North American GTR owners club which is very car centric and has a more serious technical tone to it. with MYGTR i wanted it to be as much more laid back and about the owners of the car as the car itself. more of a hang out atmosphere so chat works for us

but one thing i will note is you can link it in the nav bar and not have it displayed. so it becomes like a seperate chat room

I am very sorry and apologize if I have offended your forum in any way :o.

I agree with the 2nd paragraph. It's going to be a huge chat dilemma that I have to deal with on top of the forum responsibility. Chat is live - so there can be more flaming and drama going on with less control . Let's not forget 370Z is an entry level sports car that costs 29K where the GTR is a limited production super sports car with a price tag of 81K dollars. With more mature owners and smaller owner database, you can almost get away with implanting anything on your forum and control it. But on The370Z, I have to think twice about doing anything to it. I have to think what happens 6 months from now, a year from now, two years etc.... I have to take everything into consideration.

RCZ 03-26-2009 02:37 PM

Thanks AK, I completely agree....

some threads are bad enough as it is, we dont need a chat room :)

theDreamer 03-26-2009 03:02 PM

Sounds good, if a chat becomes more popular, I could help setup an IRC chat channel for members who want to talk as a group quickly. This will be outside of the 370z boards and does not have to be affiliated at all.

Well it's your site and you can do anything you want with it. Obviously there was some interest shown here with the regular posters. However I don't agree with your approach which is "we're not going to have it because some unknown people, may screw it up." How about having it and see what happens first? There are some long time posters here that you could make chat mods if you're that worried about it. You already allow many non PC topics and pictures to be posted so what's the difference? Simpy have a disclaimer that says this forum is real time and your feeling or sensibilities may be harmed.

Not trying to flame, just trying to make this place even better.

Hey AK, maybe not a chat room type thing, but a chat between members would be great. I find myself exchanging lots of pm's with the same people. It would be very useful, at least for me, to be able to instant message that person within the forums. Something like the system on facebook would be amazing. It allows you to see who is currently online and send them an instant message.

?

That would be the precise reason FOR a chat room, wouldn't it?

Here's my view - A chat room would help to take the crap OUT of serious threads. ...Crap merchants like me would be like pigs in **** if we were in a chat room.

theDreamer 04-03-2009 03:07 PM

Idea I thought about, how about having a chat room for premium members, will limit who can talk in it and help promote the site?

OMGWTFBBQ 04-03-2009 04:34 PM

^--- You're not a Premium member though.

:p

I think the best idea so far has been the IRC chatroom. It doesn't have to be affiliated with the site. It just makes it a lot easier than sending visitor messages or private messages back and forth between the same two or three people.

Just because I am not does not mean I would be sad if my idea was used. I will probably become one once my car comes in, but maybe not (;)).

Oh nice! When's the ETA for your car? I was just joking by the way. :D

I've often thought that only premium members should have avatars. I think more people would be willing to dish out the cash if that were the case.

Oh I know, just like playing along. My car should arrive in May, dealer had one I wanted so I did not have to order. :D
Frosty, you are right, not just avatars but "extras," I know you get more with the premium membership, but locking down things everyone wants will net you more. Though many times forums prefer the premium members to be those who are going to be their long term, so those willing to pay will not to just have extra features.
