AK needs Feedback: Subscription emails

We recently had a situation where our forum software was sending out hundreds and hundreds of email EVERY hour! This has caused significant pressure to our server resources. So, we went ahead and installed a mod so that it only sends x amounts of email every hour. Now, after mod install, I have received two pms from two members that complained they are not receiving their subscription email. Both of these members had their subscription notification to "instant" (which I always discourage people to do).

Our default is "daily email notification" and if you don't like receiving email everyday it's highly suggested that you select "subscription with no email notification" [ DO NOT select "NO subscription" as with this option you'll never be able to keep track of your threads"]

Now, my question to you will be, Are you receiving your subscription emails? If yes, please let me know. If no, I also need to know as well.

thanks.

I have mine on No Notification but I can tell you the premium membership renewal email is working fine.

:hello: Ak, I have set my option to no email notification. and I still get emails pushed out...

I constantly have to delete my email notifications from either my mac or smart phone, I

find it kinda annoying, is there something you can do to help? I might

not be the only one that this happens to or maybe you have heard oh this issue. let me know if can be fixed? thanks Ak.... :tiphat:

phelan 12-25-2009 12:35 PM

that's normal. EVERY thread you created/posted BEFORE changing the option to "NO EMail notification", you will still receive the notification from those threads because it's selected to daily. What you CAN do is just manually change the notification to those older threads to no email notification as you make new posts . ANY thread that's created/posts posted AFTER the change, you will NOT receive any notification. Do you understand how it works now?

Trips 12-25-2009 12:50 PM

Oh I see how it works now..
Thanks Ak and Merry Christmas :tiphat:

nogoodname 12-25-2009 01:17 PM

imagine "instant notification" for me...lol
40K in one thread and 40K in another... that's alot of posts and emails... no choice but to turn this option off.

frost 12-25-2009 01:39 PM

I have all that stuff set to not Email me, I don't receive anything ... anything. The default should be to not Email, and you can turn it on if you want it.

kdo2milger 12-25-2009 03:35 PM

I am recieving emails AK, its working.

I agree with you 100% but "daily email notification" is default because of "1 post members" You'll be surprised how many people will make a single post/thread and then disappear. Totally forgets about the forum. When they get a notification email the next day or two weeks later, they come back and reply.

Thank you for the feedback.

I need MORE feedback from people with email subscription. If there is a issue, it needs to be resolved.

Josh@STILLEN 12-25-2009 04:59 PM

It stopped working for a couple of days, seems to be working now, but delayed..

Some of us depend on this (vendors).. so whatever you can do to resolve is appreciated..

Oh.. and Merry Christmas AK! :D

schrute 12-26-2009 01:14 AM

Hey AK,

I have thread subscription emails turned off so I can't give feedback there but I am having a problem with PM notification emails, I'm getting them about 48 hours late when I used to get them immediately. Just thought I'd let ya know.

Josh@STILLEN 12-27-2009 11:20 PM

If you're still keeping track.. I haven't gotten a subscription notification for days now..

:)

teejnut 12-28-2009 01:38 AM

I have it as instant and have not received updates to subscribed threads for awhile. Also, didn't receive one with PMs.

AK370Z 12-28-2009 05:06 AM

Thank you for your input. Looks like instead of sending x amount of emails/hour, it's not sending email at all (though I'm receiving all the reported posts and other emails..interesting).

I am going to look into this. Hopefully it's fixable. Thanks for your continued patience.

I second the PM notification.

TX_370 12-29-2009 07:01 AM

I turned my subscription emails off and I am still receiving them every few hours.

SilverBullet 12-29-2009 07:01 AM

I am getting pm notifications really late also. A couple days after receiving the original pm.

vipor 12-29-2009 08:16 AM

i don't subscribe with email notifications, but i haven't gotten any accidentally either. figured i'd put in my :twocents: since others stated they received emails they hadn't asked for.

Caravanshaka 12-29-2009 08:23 AM

well, if this is related, I haven't been getting PM notifications for a while. But I did get a notification today at 4am, for a PM I received last wednesday.

370Zsteve 12-29-2009 08:24 AM

I have a couple of threads set for daily notification, but I don't receive any.

Josh@STILLEN 12-29-2009 10:20 AM

It would appear that none of the notifications were lost, they are just backed up in the system, and coming out now, "catching up" if you will.

That would explain why some are getting them even after notification turned off, as it probably wasn't when those were queued up in the email server.

Hopefully AK can get some throughput on the server and everything will go back to normal.

:)

AK370Z 12-29-2009 07:17 PM

Thank you everyone for you input.

Josh, you will not believe what I'm going through. I haven't slept more than 4 hours in last two days trying to figure out this issue. I think what we are looking at is that I am going to have to move the site to a bigger server with no restrictions. This means SIGNIFICANT increase in price on my server fee. I want to offer the best to our members and vendors but I don't want our forum to go offline if I can't pay the monthly server fee. I'm doing tons of reseach and brainstorming. There should be a downtime tonight and followed by longer downtime next week when the whole migration happens. Looks like I'll be spending my New Years Eve/New Years Day/all next week infront of my computer :shakes head: ... :icon17:

So, You ARE getting the emails now?(at a slower rate?)

Josh@STILLEN 12-29-2009 10:41 PM

You know what, crank the vendor fees up.. say double and let them support you. We have a great hosting company that we use for our ecommerce site, as well as an inexpensive one for our blog, let me know if I can help, not sure what you're load is like, but I can vouch for years of amazing service.

Yes, I'm getting them, they are about 4-5 days back, and pop in here and there, I know it's the same for others in our building, imagining it's the same for all. They aren't gone, they are just backed up.

I'm serious about the vendor fees, let's all pull together and support you, and give this site the bandwidth and features it deserves..

blue660r01 12-29-2009 10:42 PM

no Im not receiving email

Josh, thank you so much for you kind words. We are going to do the move first. We will think about the money later.

http://www.the370z.com/announcements...-96-hours.html

I plan on increasing the money slightly as I don't want to scare people off. I think a very slight increase in premium member and vendor fee will be enough to compensate for the extra server fee. There will be a thread in future where I'll post the price and you guys will be able to discuss it. I will NEVER implement something that members are not comfortable with.

thanks

Sounds fair to me, AK.

If the subscription emails are the problem, why not put a cap on the number of subscribed threads? I subscribe to a lot of threads but I changed my default to "no notification" and just check the flagged threads in the User CP.

AK370Z 01-10-2010 03:22 AM

Hey Everyone,

I know you haven't been receiving emails last 11 days or so. I wanted to tackle email issue after the server move. But I actually found a setting that I can use which will send all the queued and current emails to you.

What I need to know is

a. Have you started receiving old subscription emails? You're going to start receiving emails starting from Last week of December (12/24/09) to today. Please let me know if you start to receive these emails or not.

If my calculations and settings are correct, it'll take 67 hours for ALL 32,700 queued email to go out. 67 hours = 2 days 19 hours.

thanks

AS for the Server update, there were some errors in the database of the transferred data. My server company is working on that. I DON'T have any way of expediting it. All I can do is wait and keep you guys updated when everything is ready.

ChrisSlicks 01-10-2010 09:50 AM

Received some starting at 4:06am to 9:10am cool!

SmoothZ 01-10-2010 10:16 AM

Not so cool that I am NOT subscribed to any threads, yet I just received over 20 this morning after thinking all was fixed.

Well hell man, you got them for something! Previously sub'd, private messages, whatever.

AK, mine are coming in! :ughdance:

Yowza! Does both the database and email server reside on the same server? (say no) :eekdance:.

schrute 01-10-2010 01:00 PM

AK, I did get a bunch of PM emails between 4:20 AM and 11:40 AM this morning.

That's totally normal. These emails can be

a. pm notification email

b. friend request notification email or visitor message notification email etc.

c. Also, these emails can be subscription emails from the threads BEFORE you switched to "no email notification".

I wouldn't worry about it. It's normal. If you DO need an explanation of your email, you can forward them all to me at The370z@live.com

thanks

Looks like we are sending out emails from 12.28.09 right now.

AK370Z 01-11-2010 12:26 AM

This email situation is solved. Currently system is sending out emails from 12/30/09 (2400 emails in queue now)
