What lens would recommend to someone just starting out? I have the 50D with standard lens.
Aperture is great. I use it for everything. As for a Lens I'm not too sure about Canon's stuff because I shoot with Nikon. But a suggestion would be to get a lens with a large aperture such as f1.4, 1.8, 2, or 2.8. With larger apertures (aperture is the blades inside the lens that open and close to control depth of field and how much light can hit the cameras sensor during any given shot) you can blur the background by controlling the depth of field which is great for isolating the subject, and they're also better for getting faster shutter speeds by allowing more light to hit the sensor, which means less blurry photos.

Hey sorry for the late response. Just saw this post, it did not show up in my email notifications. Dallaz, thanks for taking the time to educate a newb and make a lens suggestion. I will probably go with an off brand, Canon lens are expensive.
