The Wreaths Across America story began over 15 years ago when Worcester Wreath Company (a for-profit commercial business from Harrington, Maine) began a tradition of placing wreaths on the headstones of our Nation's fallen heroes at Arlington National Cemetery.

Over that period of time, Worcester Wreath has donated 75,000 wreaths which were placed by volunteers in a wreath laying ceremony each December.

In 2007 one of our team members wanted to attend the ceremony at the Houston National Cemetery with his son. This was the beginning of a goal for not only one boy and his dad, but also several volunteers. On this day father and son found out and realized the Houston National Cemetery does not receive the live wreaths for all burial sites. The National Cemetery does receive the seven large wreaths (each representing one of the branches of services and the MIA/POW’s) as all other National Cemeteries do. The ceremony is held to place the seven larger wreaths in the front of the National Cemetery. But what about each of the fallen soldier’s grave sites? There the challenge began for Houston to show the Nation how we honor our fallen soldiers , raise the funds, recruit volunteers and place a wreath on all 53,000+ grave sites at the Houston National Cemetery on December 13, 2008. Although we did not reach our big goal for all the sites at HNC in 2008, we were able to place almost 14,000 wreaths! A huge step for Houston as we honored our fallen heroes. Look for our updates and information regarding the 2009 Wreaths Across America-Houston project.

2008 14,400 Wreaths placed 8,000 in attendance
2009 22,900 Wreaths placed 15,000 in attendance
2010 With your help we will place over 57,000 wreaths!

1.) Our deadline is quickly approaching!! We need to have the bulk of our wreath order in BEFORE Thanksgiving. If you have done a fundraiser, NOW is the time to get those payments in. We will be able to add smaller amounts to our order for another week or so after that, but the wonderful people at Worcester Wreaths need a general idea of how many wreaths they need to make (by hand!).

2.) About the actual ceremony on 12/11: It will be less than 40 minutes! NO politician speeches.
**You do not need to sign up or RSVP to attend the ceremony or lay wreaths! Just show up! We will be very happy to see you.**

3.) VERY important! On 12/11, there will be extremely limited parking at the cemetery... getting there a bit early will not guarantee you a spot. The plan is for everybody to park at Greenspoint Mall, near the old Sears. Buses will be shuttling people over to the cemetery (and back) from 8:30 AM till 3 PM. THANKS in advance for your patience and understanding!

4.) Also VERY important! WE STILL NEED BUSES and certified drivers! We have some, but not enough. We were turned down by Metro. Please ask anybody who might have a connection with a school district or other source of buses if they could volunteer! We also need POLICE OFFICERS to donate their time to help with traffic control at the mall and at the cemetery. Please have BUS or POLICE volunteers e-mail info@waahouston.com .

5.) A General Session meeting is this Sat., Nov. 20th, at Monterey Restaurant in Humble, 2 PM. Click on the Events tab for specifics. This meeting is ONLY for people who want to become MORE involved with the WAA-Houston project and are willing to volunteer to help plan the 2011 event. *If you're just interested in laying wreaths, you don't need to come to this meeting!*

THANKS so much for reading all this info and supporting our project! And we really appreciate your patience with getting your receipts back for your donation and getting your questions answered--- We are all-volunteer, working as quickly as we can. Look forward to seeing you on Dec. 11th!
