Texas front plate

Well I got pulled over by a DPS Trooper for not having a front plate visible it was on the dash he said he did not see it gave me a warning.
So I was debating putting the plate on.

Auston 07-25-2010 03:15 PM

I would, otherwise you have an automatic reason to get pulled over

theDreamer 07-25-2010 03:17 PM

I still have yet to put mine on, got pulled over once so far and he wrote me a ticket but it got thrown out.
If a cop wants to pull you over for a front plate violation, he must be in a really bad mood or hates your car.

Lemers 07-25-2010 04:04 PM

I have mine on with the stillen bracket. Usually the front plate doesn't warrant a pullover in its self. But it is a violation and a reason to look for more. Smaller towns might also pull you over if you are not from around there. So it's your gamble, just like speeding.

Zaggeron 07-25-2010 04:40 PM

Technically it is legal if clearly visible inside the windshield -- You may have trouble convincing your small town LEO of that though ... Also, doesn't seem very safe for any passengers sitting on the passenger side -- anything loose like that in the cockpit can become a dangerous projectile in an accident

got pulled over in the middle of nowhere on the way to Abilene from Austin. He didn't know the law, so he just gave me a warning.

edit: this was July 2009

caneman88 07-25-2010 05:09 PM

I was heading home from Austin on toll 130 after it turns toward Buda right around exit at 183 he was looking for speeders but my Escort and Laser jammer picked him up way in advance and he was just using K band radar no laser so I slowed down to 68mph in a 70mph zone. I think he was a rookie.:driving:

For sale Stillen front license plate bracket does not work with the S-Tune spoiler.

nolan1016 07-25-2010 07:07 PM

I dont use a front plate, not worth it to make the front look ugly. I have never gotten pulled over for missing the plate.

If you look on the road there are many cars that dont have a front plate.

Im going to go knock on some wood now.

Lemers 07-25-2010 08:05 PM

from the Texas DMV "State law requires that you display two (2) license plates, one to the front and one to the rear. Placement or mounting of license plates is not defined."

A cop can write you a ticket for placement of the plate on the dash. The officer would claim that the plate isn't facing forward. In this case it would be up to the court to side with you or the officer.

theDreamer 07-25-2010 08:35 PM

I would love to see a judge rule in favor if a plate is in the front windshield, hell, most people who even challenge a no front plate who do not have a front plate get it thrown out.

batman_4 07-25-2010 08:53 PM

when im in the city (san antonio) i don't have my front plate mounted. however if i head to atx or go down to the valley (any interstate traveling) i put the plate on.

Lemers 07-25-2010 10:24 PM

I would trust a small town cop to pull to "no front plate" card before a big city cop in Texas. More so if youre an out-of-towner.

I got pull over. Just made fake fixed receipt and paid $10 fine.

Caravanshaka 07-26-2010 08:20 AM

depends where you live, but they are horrible here. i bought the stillen tow hook bracket and extended it to fit my nismo.

go catch bank robbers, child molesters, and rapists..... not "no front license plate" good folk.

my friend got pulled over in his Subaru WRX, he had it on stuck on the windshield and DPS told him it was illegal in TX

I don't know how effective this is or will be, but hey, worth a shot-

Don't have one mounted right now, but I did buy the Show-n-Go motorized plate holder. Hopefully the install will go smooth this weekend

Lemers 07-28-2010 02:03 AM

You need to post a video when done

Boost_lee 07-28-2010 03:51 AM

Will do for sure.

I'm not mounting my plate as the current DIY shows (they cut the sport package chin spoiler which I don't want to do). I'll be attempting to mount in the grill area and try to get it in the stock location.

I have no plate on the front of my car, and do not plan to put one on it. So far, the law has had better things to do then harass me.

got a speeding ticket and the cop gave me some bs about the plate, but no ticket for it. haven't been pulled over for not having it or anything.

Lemers 08-03-2010 08:45 AM

Again it's all up to the individual cop if they want to enforce the front plate law. Some areas are under more pressure to write tickets than others. Any traffic law that you break gives the cop a chance to pull you over. Difference in speeding and no front plate is that I can slow down when I see a cop...I can't just throw a plate on the front of my car when I see him.
