You can make a good argument with Ali but i think most people will have him at 1 because of all the media press he had compare to louis, and all of the promotion he had "thrilla in manila","rumble in the jungle" those were some good promotions. But ask any hardcore boxing fan (me), and any experts most of them will have louis as number 1 heavyweight.

But i gave it to Joe louis because fought every one in his division never ducked anyone he made 25 defenses of his title, was a world champion for like 10 something years knocked out opponents like nobody's business, and on top of that he served in the army during ww2 and fought people for free to raise money for the army. He lost once during his prime it tells you what kind of competition he had back then and avenged it for the nations honor. I personally think he will have a better record if it wasn't for the war. The sad part about his story is that he fought and raise money for the govt during the war, then the end IRS told him the he owes the govt 500,000 i think he should be one of those rare occurance that the irs should have gave a free pass. Then louis continued fighting to pay his debt and eventually at end on the twilight of his career fought marciano and lost. Dude is the ultimate american hero IMHO.
Yeah i cant really argue against you for puttin Louis at 1...For me its Ali, Robinson, then Louis in that order...Louis had alot of notible fights like schmelling, con, braddock..but Ali had alot of dangerous fights like forman, frazier, liston, norton, spinks..etc...For me, and alot will disagree, Ali is the GOAT.

I'm an avid boxing fan, I got started when i watched barrera vs hamed. I use to hate hamed and when barrera schooled him oh man was the best day ever. Then from then on my interest grew and started watching documentary about sugar ray robinson, joe louis, duran etc. For a while it was only barrera and morales that was carrying the lower weight division, if anyone want to see one of the best fight ever watch barrera vs morales. Many people would say gatti vs ward which was awesome but it was a pretty sloppy fight, but the barrera vs morales was good technical back to back boxing. Yeah kostya was the man @ 140 dominated that division for a while lol remember this.

Unfortunately I'm too young to see those fights live. I could watch it on youtube or something but it just doesn't capture the same excitement when the fight is live. I can't imagine how crazy it was watching the hagler vs hearns first round, best round in boxing.

Lol technical is an understatement. I tell you this though pernell I think is the best defensive fighter i've seen fight, that's including floyd and he would bang if needed. Dude was the man he also fought some legends and got robbed ie chavez fight. I personally think he would whoop on pacman and floyd.

Teddy talks about this all the time and he's right...we need to dump the alphabet soup n get 1 regulated sanctioning body...I like when fightrs unify the belts but its too damn crooked..that's why we lost a lot of fans to mma.

Don't even get me started on that we should only have one belt per weight division. The main reason we lost people to mma is you can't watch boxing anymore, you have to pay to watch a decent fight ie the super six tournament I havent been watching that because it's on showtime. In MMA flip the channel to spike and they give you some decent main events.

It might seem like i hate floyd I really dont' i use to be a huge fan especially when he fought a close fight against castillo and fought a rematch and dominated him then i don't really know what happened after that. I really don't get him he could easily beat almost everyone in the welterweight division, but he always ducks any challenges that could threaten his record after the castillo fight. For god sakes he picked baldomir over margorito.
