[B]I think Ricci is in trouble!

Brown admits to "mechanisms" in Ricciardo's F1 contract

McLaren CEO Zak Brown has admitted that there are "mechanisms" within Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula 1 contract that could end it early.

Brown admits to "mechanisms" in Ricciardo's F1 contract
Ricciardo’s long-term future at the Woking-based team has been thrown into question after Brown last week made comments that the Australian driver’s results had not lived up to expectations.

Ricciardo accepted that his time at the team had not delivered the results he nor his bosses would have liked, but he was clear in Monaco that he was committed for the full three years of his contract which runs out at the end of 2023.

Speaking ahead of a visit to the Indianapolis 500, though, Brown suggested that McLaren’s deal with Ricciardo was not completely watertight.

For while Ricciardo was halfway through a three-year contract, he suggested there were break clauses that could open the door for a parting of ways if things did not improve.

Asked if there was a get-out clause for the driver or team if they did not want to continue in to 2023, Brown said: “I don’t want to get into the contract, but there are mechanisms in which we’re committed to each other, and mechanisms in which we’re not.

“I spoke with Daniel about it. We’re not getting the results that we both hoped for, but we’re both going to continue to push.

“I think he showed in Monza [last year] he can win races. We also need to develop our race car; it’s not capable of winning races. But we’d like to see him further up the grid.

“And we’ll see how things develop and what he wants to do. And then we’ve got our testing programme ramping up, but we’re in no rush.”

Ricciardo’s future beyond 2023 had already appeared to be dependent on the progress of McLaren’s IndyCar youngsters, with Pato O’Ward having been singled out as a leading contender if the team felt confident enough in going for a rookie. Yesterday, Arrow McLaren SP announced O’Ward had renewed his contract with the team for at least three more years.

A swoop for the Mexican to replace Ricciardo for 2023 could be viewed as too early, although the Mexican is set for more F1 running later this season.

“We’ve got both our test drivers under contract,” said Brown. “Pato’s definitely going to be one of those. He did a very good job in Abu Dhabi [young driver test] last year.

“The IndyCar schedule is very packed, as you know, but the end of the year you won’t be surprised to see him in one of those cars.”

O’Ward reckoned he had another two or three years to break into F1 before he felt he would be too old to make the switch.

“I think the deadline is there because of age,” he said. “Once you’re 25 or 26, that window closes quite a bit. So obviously if that opportunity comes about, you take it, right?

“My dream of becoming a racing driver came about in Formula 1 That’s something that’s never going to leave. It’s a part of me. It’s what opened my heart to such a different world.”

The only shock here is how soon it is being openly admitted...

Ferrari: No chance of staying below the current F1 140 million budget cap.

The cap is about to die. RedBull, Mercedes and Ferrari are about to shake up this subject. Some of the small teams are not happy but do they matter lol

See, this is part of the reason I stopped watching. The cap is there for a reason. If you hit your limit, no more development. Manage the space well.

Except that the cap is also for operating budget. And things like shipping and fuel have risen considerably since the number was first discussed.

No question, development was the intent. But it always seemed ridiculous to me to introduce a totally new car, and limit the budget for all teams to what Williams spent in 2019 at the same time. Getting it wrong was going to be a killer.

Meanwhile, "smaller teams" have the likes of Schumacher and Latiffi, who aren't cheap on chassis!

That's no excuse considering other teams like Alfa and Alpine accounted for possible hiccups in planned budgets. These teams have enough professionals to plan better. I have no sympathy for them.

wtf Ferrari might as well let the drivers manage the strategy.

Another wasted weekend for LeClerc.

LMAO, might as well go to spec cars! F1 has always been about money and development. If you want to run with the big dogs step up. How do you think Ferrari was so dominant for so long, how did Red Bull get into the game and even Renault had good run. F1 is the closet in professional Motorsports to being a run what you brung, game. Everyone loves the underdog until they get on top and stay there too long!

As the saying goes, if you ain't cheating, you ain't winning! Find the loop holed or get the rules changed. All is fair in love and war!

https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/f1...kend/10318851/

Following Ferrari's failed protest against Max Verstappen at the Monaco Grand Prix for crossing the pit exit line, the FIA made clear that revisions to its rules over the winter have brought in a change of approach to what drivers can do.

Whereas previously drivers were in breach of the rules if they touched the lines, now it has been clarified that cars must not cross the line – which has been classified as having a 'full wheel' beyond it.

In pre-event notes issued by F1's race directors up until Monaco, it had been stated that drivers had to strictly keep to one side of the line.

But in light of the Monaco clarification, and a change in F1's International Sporting Code over the winter, Wittich has revised the message to teams and drivers for this weekend.

In his official event notes, the relevant section on the pit entry and exit lines ahead of the Baku weekend said: "In accordance with Chapter 4, Article 4 and 5 of Appendix L to the ISC drivers must follow the procedures at pit entry and pit exit."

This means that drivers can now go across the lines, as long as the full tyre does not go beyond it.

What the International Sporting Code says

The rules on the pit entry and exit lines are covered in Chapter 4 of Appendix L of the International Sporting Code.

The regulations were altered this year to move away from a rules breach being when any 'part' of a car had crossed the line, to now be a tyre.

Formula 1 cars are going to have to be two-seaters in future, with a lawyer riding in the back!
