CO Poisoning 12/17/09

Long story short to explain my absence for the second half of the day where I was supposed to ship many orders and such...

Earlier this morning I simply got carbon monoxide poisoning from neg pressure causing smoke to be forced out the hatch of our pot belly stove that heats the shop. That’s because I did the duct work myself which basically shows you what kind of heating and ventilation jobs I do :ugh2:. Through out the day I was showing symptoms of it and thought it was cold symptoms until I started constantly forgetting what I was about to do, was going to do, and kept on miss placing my phone. Simple things that you always forget but in an abnormal quantity. SO I was forced by my co worker to check myself in which a blood test confirmed my CO poisoning and then had to be hooked up to an oxygen tank for a few hours and then stick around just in case.

Even though I have been working with wood fires and wood burning stoves my entire life I never have done my own ducting so its my fault for this and I apologize to anybody who was waiting on a PM from me today.

So a quick reminder to all. Because its that time of year that we have to be indoors more and use allot more heat everybody be careful. If you have head aches, nausea, vomiting, lose of apatite / vision / memory, dizziness, and like symptoms its prob not a cold, its CO poisoning. I mean it can be a cold or flue but the thing is you don’t want to think that. You want to assume the worst so you can get yourself checked just to be safe. I did a quick search not more than a few min ago. Turns out many people die a year from CO poisoning that they don’t even know about, thousands a year in the US are treated for it, and I might be wrong but I think I read that near half the hospitals in the US cant properly diagnose CO poisoning? I'm not sure on that last one but its a scary thought. Basically be smart and get a CO detector. I know I will tomorrow.

Other then that I'll have pms and tracking for everybody tomorrow, I had the exhaust fixed, and I will continue to use fire to heat my shop because its cheap and calming :)

Good news is its 12.49 AM. I feel fine just a light head ach soooo Good night all!

That stuff can kill someone... Monoxide is the bad one compared to dioxide.

You should seriously buy some 3M N95 masks. That mask is damn good!!!!

Holy...

Glad you're okay man. I think you owe that coworker lunch.

i call bullshit!!!

Many thanks to you guys. I will be getting some better masks than what we have just in case I suspect anything whether or not the CO detector goes off but other then that I feel fine now just a tiny head ach from dealing with those ER jerks. Can you believe it took over an hour for a blood test... I live one block away from a hospital but it totally defeats the purpose of the hospital has outdated equipment and careless employees >:O

Again thanks! Now I'm going to bed...

This is upsetting. I hope I don’t see this from other members because that is a seriously gutsy thing to do on a forum. I really hope to not see any more of this from anybody and would at least hope to get a little more respect.

Its CO poisoning from a wood burning stove with new duct work. Its not like I said I was driving down the highway and transformers fell from the sky and caused me to swerve into an other car and got in an accident.

I really feel like I shouldn’t explain myself.

Thanks

Do you have a smoke detector, that should of caught the leaked smoke. When I start my wood stove.... You can definately see a haze sometimes... That's the smoke from start up.
