SoCal driving roads

Anyone know of good driving roads around Long Beach. My all time favorite canyon road is Decker Canyon Rd. Potrero Rd is fun as well. But these take an hour to get to. I did find Palos Verdes Dr E which is at the end of the 110. I just wish I knew of a few closer twisty turn roads.

Not into long sweeping high speed turns. I prefer lots of hair pins and "S" turns.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Ackrite 03-13-2013 11:53 PM

I like Angeles Crest and Ortega. I want to discover more roads in SoCal since good motorcycle riding weather has arrived and some riding buddies want to set up some rides soon.

MrXistential 03-14-2013 01:00 AM

I tried Angeles Crest in my 350z but the altitude change just zapped my performance. Ortega looks cool i'll have to try it out.

Thanks

When I have the time, I'm going to post a whole highlighted map of driving roads. But in the meantime, I'm going to list out a few to remind myself later when I get to the project:
Mulholland West
2 North to Angeles Crest Highway (Straightaway to curvy mountain roads)
Topanga Canyon Road
Griffith Park (circuit?)
Latigo Canyon Road near Malibu (This one is made me carsick, and I don't get carsick either!)
Sepulveda Blvd

I know what you mean. There's a seemingly endless onslaught of aggressive/tight turns and elevation changes on that one.

In the same general area I like stunt and piuma. They remind me of decker but closer to get to, if you live in the west valley/LA.

I vote for Topanga Canyon. I took it from PCH to Calabasas last month and it was a good drive. Just watch out for the crappy stop sign cameras turning off of PCH.......

Waiz 03-14-2013 06:20 PM

Angeles Crest has too many cops, we did a cruise once and it was a massive fail

I normally like going up Topanga or Kanan or even the Tujunga to Palmdale route is fun too

I go from the Wrightwood side to Newcomb, then back. There's hardly ever any traffic and never seen a cop passed the Wrightwood area. It's easier that way for me since I'm coming from the I.E.

MrXistential 03-15-2013 03:29 AM

Thanks guys for reminding me how many great roads we have here.

nighthalox 04-01-2013 12:52 PM

Latigo Canyon and Old Topanga Canyon. Kanan is okay as well.

MrXistential 04-04-2013 01:19 AM

Kanan doesn't have enough sharp turns for me. When I am out in that area I usually prefer Decker Canyon Rd. Right now I have been having alot of fun on Turnbull Canyon Rd in Whittier. Turnbull has pretty narrow roads with tight turns just kinda short.

Glad to see this thread!

Does anyone know of any good ones near the inland empire/riverside area I SoCal?

rhartlin 05-26-2015 09:51 PM

I would have to include the Idyllwild, Big Bear, and Palomar mountain on my list of great Socal twisty roadways.

Bishop370z 05-30-2015 08:07 PM

Idyllwild is good. Just drove it a couple weeks ago. Ortega is good too but gets crowded sometimex.

fzgood 06-14-2015 10:22 PM

Just visited Sequoia this weekend. This one is a time commitment but it's beautiful for the forested part and it makes Palomar feel silly. Very technical, i.e,. blind crests, blind turns, decreasing radius turns, but it's worth your time and gas if you find yourself nearby on a weekend.

I moving to the Irvine area soon and I'm wondering if anyone has driven this road before?

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/33.7...0f1799!1m0!3e0

Or if there's anything else near by.

lj909 06-15-2015 02:26 AM

I think that might be a fire access type of road.

marks370z 06-15-2015 11:42 PM

Don't forget GMR(Glendora Mountain Road) boys. One of the the most technical roads I've encountered, but loads of fun!

I'm in Irvine too. That road isn't paved but depending on the mods you have it could be great.

Closest roads are Ortega and Glendora. Glendora is more technical but the road quality past the GRR fork is pretty bad.

JoshV562 06-21-2015 12:50 AM

I am from Long Beach and unfortunately we have no winding local roads. The terminal island freeway 103 that turns to the 47 is a fun straight that you can test top speed on a long straight leading to the ports. GMR is a bit far from Long Beach but is the closest road that will offer a long fun drive. Tujunga canyon up the 210 is a bit farther than GMR from Long Beach but its an isolated canyon that no one drives up. Tujunga has many 3rd and 4th gear corners with some hairpins as compared to GMR in which I was mainly in 2nd and 3rd gear. IMO the funnest canyon roads for the Z ranked in order are Tujunga, GMR, Topanga, Ortega, Angels Crest and Azusa Canyon road. I am a big togue fan so if I missed any roads or anyone knows of any let me know!:tiphat:

Today I did Las Vergines towards the ocean, R on Mulholland, L on Kanan, L on Latigo Canyon to PCH. Latigo was AWESOME! Had to stop and make 1 adjustment along the way. Need more fine tuning.

lhinojos 09-05-2015 01:55 PM

Ive been here a couple of times, I tried about two weeks ago and there was a brush fire that had the road closed. Its got a very nice lookout. I used it take girls up at night to see the stars(i know cheesy but they gobble it up lol) Its off the 210 and azuza

Dcocci 09-05-2015 02:43 PM

You're far from this road, but if you're up for a drive, Route 33 in Ojai is outstanding. There are also some great technical roads up here in the Santa Barbara area.

Eagle 09-06-2015 01:29 PM

A better option is Santiago canyon to trabuco canyon and it's close to this road and it's longer than the one you posted. If you've ever heard of cooks corner than, you probably already know about Santiago.

Anyway, for south oc, the best road is Ortega, followed by Santiago, not much else other than those two.

Eagle 09-06-2015 01:30 PM

And yes....dcocci is on point regarding Ojai, the twisties just go on and on....

Masterbeatty 09-17-2015 05:09 PM

Ortega Hwy dana point and palomar Mtn near ocean side.

Add in a visit to Julian and I can't think of a better way to spend a weekend morning.

Nothing beats a warm apple pie!

I miss San Diego but I might be moving back in a few months.

SoCal guys and gals should try this. 20+ miles 130 turns many sharpies and will numb our hands.

It's routes like this one that make me start thinking about weight reduction and suspension mods... My car is happier on ACH. Malibu is so special though. Fleeting glimpses of blue ocean tempt your eyes away from the road. Hmm.. I haven't been there in almost a year...

I'm reviving this thread because with the holidays quickly approaching I think we all need some alone-time to look forward to. On my last trip to Palomar I deviated from my planned route south on the 79 from Julian and swung a left on the "Sunrise Hwy" route S1. Relatively empty on the weekend full of fast sweepers and a nice view--mountain forests to the west and desert plateau cliffs to the east. Highly recommend for a relaxed less technical drive.

fzgood 01-05-2016 09:54 AM

Finally made it out to CA-33 heading north out of Ojai this weekend. It's a great road to nowhere, but i probably won't go again in the winter--it doesn't look like it gets much cleaning and all the dirt is a bit intimidating.

TerribleONE 01-05-2016 09:59 AM

Not sure if its been mentioned but latigo canyon is awesome and not quite as far as decker potrero.

I went to Google maps and counted corners after I was done at Latigo. It was a great drive.

dP3NGU1N 01-05-2016 10:13 PM

zmanelite 01-05-2016 11:00 PM
