Angeles Crest Highway
Anyone have an idea on when this is going to be reopened? I used to tear this road up with my AWD A4 back in the day and with my TL (slightly less). When I got the Z I somehow resisted until break-in but right after a 1000mi I drove straight there and it was closed because of storm damage (according to cal-trans). So does anyone have any info on when they're looking to reopen? I didn't find much through cal-trans.
Who's in for a run once it opens back up? I imagine it'll have smooth rebuilt roads for the most part, cal-trans says they're fixing all the blemishes on the road. |

Angeles Crest News (thanks Rick!): Newcomb's Ranch opened at noon on March 12, 2010.
Angeles Crest will remain closed until sometime this summer due to road repairs between the bottom and the Palmdale turnoff. You can get to Newcomb's by taking the 210 freeway exiting at Sunland Blvd and heading east 2 miles to the Jack in the Box and turning north on Oro Vista which becomes Big Tujunga. The first part of Big Tujunga is very bumpy for about 1/4 mile with some damp patches. Continue on Big Tujunga to the Angeles Forest Highway and turn left. After you pass through the tunnel the road narrows to one lane just before where Hidden Springs Cafe used to be. When you reach Upper Big Tujunga (9 mile) turn right. The road is clear all the way to Angeles Crest where you will turn left. The shady section about 3 miles ahead is damp and icy early in the morning so head up after 9 or 10am. Newcomb's is now open limited hours until April but you can be sure it will be open during the day. |

GMR? I'm not familiar...
I really hope Newcomb's doesn't close, that would suck balls. Thanks for the info 03z33...I also tried Big Tujunga but it was after dark and the road was closed. It's a pretty bad dirt road in the beginning of it so I don't know about driving 1/4 mile @ 2mph. I'm itching to run a decent canyon!! |

Meh. Angeles Crest is never really not crowded plus all the Lance Armstrongs are always out there seemingly on the whole damn thing. Not to mention cops and rice rockets. As canyons go, that place is overrated and unfortunately there really is no open local canyons that are decent.

I use to do azusa canyon and gmr regularly. I would go maybe 7 or 8am and never hit traffic. Or you could go on a weekday afternoon and have it all to yourself for the most part.
