I visited the B&H superstore in Manhattan on Sunday and nearly needed a new pair of pants. OMG, it's Disney World for any photo or gadget guy. I bought a Manfrotto Monopod with a Manfroto ballhead. I don't remember the model number, bu it has the legs on the bottom that flip out. I can't wait to use this thing.

Need advice
Currently looking for prime lenses for Canon L lenses 70% of the time, it's for automobile and 30% portraits and etc I'm looking at 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm I believe 85 is ideal for portraits but I really like the feed backs. What do you think I should get? Current body is 5D mkII Lenses I have: 16-35, 24-70, 70-200 Thanks in advance.

85 hands down. if you get a bit of sticker shock, check out the 135 f/2, you'd be surprised how good it is on full frame

what do you think of the 400 2.8 vs the 400 DO? i haven't used either, i'd just like to know your experiences with them.
also... you have a 50 f/1.0?!

The only benefit of the DO is it's weight. The lens is very light. It is super sharp, rivaling the 4002.8 but the bokeh is funky. Out of focus specular highlights have rings in them. If you are careful it isn't noticeable. If I need light weight I use the DO. The 2.8 is a super sharp lens, the only one that is better is the 200.
400DO 200f2 - The BEST beauty lens I do have a 50f1 (and a 50f1,2 and a 50f0.95 for Canon rangefinder cameras). This lens, although super fast, is not very sharp until you hit f2.0-f2.8. The softness is very interesting though as it is super sharp in the center but sharpness falls off as you move off center. Not bad as a portrait lens but way too short in focal length. I love the 135 soft focus for portraits. It has a ring that allows you to dial in the softness from totally sharp to quite soft in three increments. It produces softness by inducing spherical abberation. The result is a sharp image with a soft image on top of it. It is unique effect most similar to using Zeiss Softar filters. Very different form diffusion filters. 135 Soft Focus

thanks! yea i've heard that about the 50 f/1.0. i hate to say it but instead of dropping serious coin on the f/1.2 and an 85 f/1.2, i've been thinking i'd try to find the 50 f/1.4 and 85 f/1.8. close to the same effect tho not the quality of the L lenses. i will eventually get a 35 f/1.2 as well. i'm just trying to decide now if i would rather have those (which i don't have room for in my camera case) or focus on upgrading my f/4 zooms to f/2.8's when funds allow

The 50f1.4 is an awesome lens. Sharp with great bokeh. The only issue is that it is rather fragile. The mechanism isn't as durable as the L lenses. As I said, I am a prime guy. They are sharper, much faster and better corrected than zooms as well as being lighter.
You may need to get a bigger bag!

Just picked up the Micro-Nikkor 105mm/f2.8 an hour ago. A little early Christmas present to myself. I can't wait to her out for a spin. It's a lot heaver and bigger than I imagined.

Picked up a NIKKOR 28mm f1.8, effectively a 42mm on my D5000. Need to go out and play with it but the weather up here isn't very accommodating:

That's a really nice piece of glass, but kind of pricey for a DX format camera. I was looking at this when I purchased my 35mm 1f/1.8 which was a fraction of the cost and just as sharp. The wider angle difference is negligible. This is great if you ever decide to go Full Frame though.
