Damn Dallaz, those are awesome pics and awesome lenses. Would love to have that setup!

I second that you dont need to have expensive lenses to get good shots. I have a hand me down Nikon D50 that my sister gave me since she has a D90 now but it does the job. I still have the stock 18-55mm lens plus the 70-300mm zoom which have allowed me to take pictures such as these:

18-55mm (came with camera, works best when zoomed all the way out to 18mm)

70-300mm (this works best when zoomed all the way in..more bokeh!)

http://www.the370z.com/members/vdc_o...-85mm-f5-6.jpg

But I have also recently purchased these two which I love. Each for about $200.
50mm 1.8 (great for portraits)

35mm 1.8 (also great for portraits but a little wider for cars too)

I love these lenses but next Im looking for something a little more wideangle. I like that 10.5mm 2.8 you have Dallaz, might just have to save up for that one.

Thanks. We started shooting years back with an old D70 which crapped out on us pretty quickly so we bought a little D40 when we were still just getting into photography. It was an awesome little camera that at one point we had 2 of just because of how portable they were and their photo quality was great until you bumped the ISO past I'd say, 800ish.

After shooting with the D40's for a while, I decided to upgrade to the D300 mainly because I would shoot my friends skateboarding (the reason for the fisheye) and wanted the 8fps with the optional battery grip, soon after that we bought the D90 and after a while ditched the 300 for the 700. Switching to full frame after shooting DX crop since the start was AMAZING! You should look into the fisheye, but be warned..... It is insanely wide! Just leave it focused at infinity on manual focus mode and anything past 2 feet from the sensor will be in focus so you don't even have to think about the shot, just take it.

This one we were probably only an inch or 2 from the flower

An older image I shot with this lens that is way over edited but I used to go a little overboard. I would say the front of the lens on this one was less than a foot away from the tip of his board.

BTW I'm not trying to take over the thread with photos, just posting some shots with the fisheye to aid in VDC's decision and anyone else's who may be skeptical about dropping money on a lens that many consider too wide and distorted for most photography applications.

I've had been thinking about that lens for a while too. Don't get it unless you really, really need it. It's a great specialty lens, but it's not versatile enough for something so expensive. If you want a fisheye, I would suggest finding a camera shop that rents it out or ask a friend who has one and loan it for the day. It looks great when used properly & in moderation, but kind of gets boring when you have 20 in a row. You are probably better of spending that money on a faster zoom lens with better glass or a new camera. The D50 is great, but 6 MP isn't much to work with nowadays.

Youre right, that money can go for car parts ..... ollie clip then?

Some damn good work on these pages! My favorites are the car with the smoke trailing it ( had 25 in the window) the honeybee, the kid on the skateboard, and the bluejay.

For photojournalism, you would want some fast glass, mostly normal focal length or mild wide angle more than telephoto.

Nice photos. Thanks much.

That's what I'm sayin!! I think I just found my next lens!!!

Here's a picture I found from a thread over on the M3 forum that I'm on and I believe it to be shot with the same lens...

NOT MY PHOTO* just an example:

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/v...a4e06e12_o.jpg

Same awesome bokeh... could be the same lens I think. Possibly the 70-200L f2 but I don't know enough about that lens to make that determination. I think it's the 135L here again!

Edit: I guess if someone could pull the EXIF data from the pic? I don't know how to do that.

VDC_OFF 04-30-2012 10:31 AM

thats magazine quality right therrr and all for just $1000.

HKYStormFront 04-30-2012 03:48 PM

thanks guys! :tiphat: yup that's the 135 you linked to. i bought it barely used for $900. there's a "Camera Gear" facebook group. it's like craigslist for pro's and semi-pro's. check it out. i'm not sure what lens was used for that shot but i know jeremy and i know he has a 70-200 f/2.8 so i'd imagine that's probably the case there. he's a friend on facebook so i asked him, i'll see what he replies...

the owner ordered a 20x30" print of that one today... as did i :bowrofl:
