Probably need to download the latest plug-in from Adobe. Nikon usually gives you the software with your camera if you just need to open an NEF file. I had the same problem opening with CS3. I should really switch to CS5, but the damn thing is so expensive (legally anyways).

Can you choose to shoot raw on your camera?

I agree the composition of that one was good, ken. If anything...I'd flip the lighting to accent the flag a little bit. Just my personal opinion of framing / composition though, and I'm the rookie here

hey thanks phelan. yah, i was actually thinking about shining a low luminance flashlight at the flag. but it put too much emphasis on the flag while it was outside the DOF and the initial focal point of the image went more towards the blurry flag than the front of the car.

maybe if it was a real simple darker colored flag (or if the flag was smaller?) it wouldn't have had as much impact...(?) also was thinking it would've been cool if i had a small LED light or something shining from the bottom of the tire stack towards the flag. (very limited props i have.... and the rug kept falling down in the backdrop as it was just folded upwards. )

Great work Kenchan, but the rug background makes the scene too "noisy." A neat trick I use for the ground, is to buy a sheet of plexy glass from home depot and place it over a plain white or black surface. It creates a slight reflection & diffuses the shadows really well. I use some plain, non-glossy bond paper for the background or anything that's not "rough" looking. It messes with how people see scale. The exposure is spot on, but the scene looks like it's still a toy. Take a the AutoArt Models website and you'll see what I mean.

^I agree. Carpet makes it too funky for me. Well taken shot though.

huh, thanks for the advise! actually, i have a sheet of plexiglass at home i can use. noted on the background as well. hope to smooth it out more. will checkout the autoart site as well. thanks!

i have a 1:18 black M3 i will practice next time around and should look perfect with a slight reflective ground for some sophistication.

Haha, I feel ya. I never have stuff lying around to take cool shots of at home. At least you have tons of models and stuff

Ummm, yep. It is not exactly a self portrait, but it is me. My wife shot that with her CoolPix last Thanksgiving -- she made me grow the beard. The suit was my idea.

Here are a couple of shots from the regatta today... Sigma 50-500 handheld. Light was terrible. Heavily overcast.

^^ awesome picts! i can feel the speed in your shot.

the front end of the boat at the corner of the frame makes it looks like it's going real fast too.
