Mr. Kenchan. I am not as articulate a critic as I can be in other areas. When it comes to judging photogrpaphs, I go with my initial gut feel which falls into one of four categories -- boring but OK, bad, well done but it doesn't speak to me or I really like it. This shot I really like.

It is nicely exposed, is interesting, has clear focus throughout and the lighting is good. You are getting better with each post. I am not just kissing your butt, either.

Thanks for sharing and for asking my opinion. Keep them coming.

My sons are going to the UTI car show Sunday -- it will probably be populated heavily with ricers, but I hear there will be some decent cars there too. Among the decent cars will be Taylor's scary-fast 280zx (one of my old ones) that he built and it is going for some dyno pulls. Although I have a rule (a guideline, actually) that my kids (men) don't get to schedule my time on the weekends, I am going to go and try to get some good shots.

ahh, thank you mr.onzedge. i can take quite a beating so no worries if you really feel something is not right, i like to know about it and apply the fix on my future shots. :p

that picture is actually using 3 incandescent and 2 flouresent (super white) bulbs to get different hue/energy from the blue rug.

i also tried all incandescent lamps with the same shot but it came out real bland and flat as if it almost looked like a sephia (sefia?) oldy golden looking picture but exposure too high, no dept no color variation. :icon14:

i also tried shining a flash light at objects while the camera was taking the long 25sec or so shot. it's a pretty cool effect. im going to try LED flashlights in the future. im done with the alfa for now.

looking forward to your shots from the carshow. hope they have antiques. :p

I agree the composition of that one was good, ken. If anything...I'd flip the lighting to accent the flag a little bit. Just my personal opinion of framing / composition though, and I'm the rookie here :icon17:

hey thanks phelan. :D yah, i was actually thinking about shining a low luminance flashlight at the flag. but it put too much emphasis on the flag while it was outside the DOF and the initial focal point of the image went more towards the blurry flag than the front of the car.

maybe if it was a real simple darker colored flag (or if the flag was smaller?) it wouldn't have had as much impact...(?) also was thinking it would've been cool if i had a small LED light or something shining from the bottom of the tire stack towards the flag. (very limited props i have.... :crying: and the rug kept falling down in the backdrop as it was just folded upwards. :rofl2: )

Great work Kenchan, but the rug background makes the scene too "noisy." A neat trick I use for the ground, is to buy a sheet of plexy glass from home depot and place it over a plain white or black surface. It creates a slight reflection & diffuses the shadows really well. I use some plain, non-glossy bond paper for the background or anything that's not "rough" looking. It messes with how people see scale. The exposure is spot on, but the scene looks like it's still a toy. Take a the AutoArt Models website and you'll see what I mean.

Ummm, yep. It is not exactly a self portrait, but it is me. My wife shot that with her CoolPix last Thanksgiving -- she made me grow the beard. :icon17: The suit was my idea.

Here are a couple of shots from the regatta today... Sigma 50-500 handheld. Light was terrible. Heavily overcast.

^^ awesome picts! i can feel the speed in your shot.

the front end of the boat at the corner of the frame makes it looks like it's going real fast too.

Thanks guys! I love how you can see the coils in the rooster tails. It is beautiful and sunny out today. We may ride back over for an hour or so. Fingers crossed.
