You may want to give Lightroom a try. Way easier to grasp for beginners and more forgiving. I started with LR and then watched copious amount of youtube videos for PS. Now I'm on to indesign.

If its just coloring and filters/effects you want to do, lightroom is just fine for that, and much less of a system hog than photoshop. If you want to combine photos, use masks, use text, etc., then Photoshop is the way to go. Lightroom has a more user friendly interface, where as Photoshop takes more getting used to and understanding what all the different layer settings/blend modes/effects do. Just a tip, either way you go, if you want to mess around in post afterward, do yourself a favor and shoot RAW. You'll have much better file flexibility and be able to change more without losing significant amounts of file data like when working with JPEG. Hope this helps!
