Ok guys need a little help. Anyone know of any good yet not super expensive cameras that can be controlled via the PC? Things like zoom / trigger. Should be auto focusing.

Look into DSLRemote app on the iPhone if you have one. It allows you to control your camera through your phone while the camera is hooked to the computer. Might be worth checking out.

There is a programming SDK for all of the Canon digital SLR's. Custom software can be developed to do just about anything. Unfortunately that is everything but zoom as that is manual on those cameras. They had similar software for the P&S product line but they stopped supporting it. I'm sure there is similar software for other camera brands, look around.

What's wrong with using a regular camera? A webcam type of device would be the easiest route, but the quality of the images will be on the "average" side depending on which one you go with.
Also, I found the link below a while back if that helps. Photosimile 200 - Light box product photography system. Mini photography studio featuring professional lighting and photo software for in-house product photograhy. The Photosimile stuff is real expensive, but could be worth it depending on your Dad's business needs.
