I'm using a 35mm f/2 Nikkor lens. Generally they offer sharper images than a zoom although i think the gap is closing. You also have to move more since you can't zoom in or out. I want to get more but money is limited for my photography budget.

I absolutely HATE photomatix shots. They're so over done, and the HDR isn't appealing no ones eyes can see that many stops of light... they were cool for a hot 5 mins

I think HDR is pretty darn neat. Its gotta be fun to play around with. I want to get into it.

I like HDR, Some photos look really good with that real obvious look that photomatix makes. Like that one of the border crossing it almost looks painted instead of a photo. Others look much better with a more subtle HDR process. Each person has their own style they like. I really wish I had a copy of photoshop to use for HDR but I just can't justify the cost at the momemnt. Same for photomatix. I prefer to get the exposure as good as possible and use as little touchup as possible.

I agree. Using as little touch up as possible is the best way to go about photo taking as it involves more skill in using the camera, which I appreciate. Although I also think that editing can give you more creative freedom, which is fun for any artist. To me HDR blurs the line between reality. It makes photos look like surreal paintings which I think is a fun creative outlet for photographers. As I have stated Im far from a pro, I come from a drawing background. I can see how hardcore photographers wouldnt like HDR as it is too processed and seems like you need less skill as a photog to create a HDR shot. Though I do believe the end results are beautiful and can create a great sense of emotion within the picture. I def see how it could be a love/hate thing in the photo community.

You might want to check out PaintShop Pro Photo - I just saw the new version is out supposedly with more advanced HDR tools.

most still have AF, just no zoom. that's not always true. prices of all lenses just depend on what f-stop (how low) they can go and the quality of glass used. in the canon lineup there are three different 50mm primes. the f/1.8 is only $125, the f/1.4 is $375-ish, the f/1.2 (with L glass) is $1530. for the average buyer, the f/1.4 is a great buy but the f/1.2 is where it's at if you want the best possible image in that lens range.

I was all about primes, 35mm F1.8, 105mm F2.8, 300mm F4. And my Tokina 11-16 F2.8 is basically a short range prime. I recently picked up the 16-85mm Nikkor for a general purpose walk around and.. its ok. Sharpness is good, with my sb700 an VR i do decent with it in low light. I'm just not sure i want to switch out a 24, 35, 50, 85 all day long. I do want a 50 1.2 though. I demo'd one out in the store and liked it Next lens on my list is the 70-200 VR ii. While the majority love this lens, a few claim its not worth its $2400 price tag. I will soon find out.

If anyone is interested i have added alot of images to my photostream. May want to pass by the recent pet and farm photos.

^ Taken with a 17-50 2.8 tamron i no longer have hah.
