on that last wall pict, did you use a 55mm? nearly impossible to get a straight verticle line if you dont have enough space to back up, right? ive had issues where trees in my shot has a curvy cat's back. :D thus i want to know more about blowing out the background like how Beach's doing it on his car shots. just use blurr software? low f/stops obviously caused parts of my car to go out of focus which is bad.

I only brought my zoom with me to the bbq, and now i see the mat line i should have used to get aligned.

yah, basically the decorations on the walls are slighly cocked.

i've always wondered why you would get a prime lens. as far as i'm concerned, it's nice for the lower f-stops you can achieve, and it's a lot lighter than some of the zoom lenses.

i'm torn on what to get for another lens, both my kit lens and tele-lens crap out at f-stops of around 5.6

I love my 35mm prime. Super sharp, and great in low light.

phelan i guess it really depends on what you're trying to take a pict of. in my case 85% will be cars, 10% landscape things when i travel, 5% portraits and closeups (my kit lens can do f/3.5 at 18mm..) which is more than enough for me.

if im doing more close ups inside the house i guess i'd opt for something with a large apeture to get a nice dramatic effect with the background blown out...and more lighting(?)

Agreed

I love primes for the fact that they not only shoot great in low light, but they are tack sharp with a higher f stop. Not to mention the bokeh advantage of the F stop wide open.

I have a Canon 50mm 1.8, Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro and Rokinon 8mm fisheye

Otherwise I'm using my Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 which is just ridiculously sharp for the price point

I'm thinking of getting a 30mm 1.4

^ nick, i purchased the canon 50 1.8 along with the my T3i yesterday. Seems that you like it? i was asking in the other thread if it was a good purchase or not.

Great for portrait shots and such. I'd go with the 35mm though since you have the 1.6x crop, at least for general purpose shooting.

The 50mm 1.8 is one of the sharpest lens you can buy considering it's only $99.

many compare the sharpness to the higher end canon 50mm.

Difference being that the 50mm 1.4 from canon has a better bokeh due to the number of blades used in the lens and the construction quality is better. But optically you can't go wrong with the 50mm 1.8

Here are a few photos I had taken with the 50mm when I first got it to give you an idea for sharpness and bokeh

i think i need to read a primer on crop factor, i always get confused by it.

so far my photography is about 40% cars, 25% conventions, 25% food, and 10% miscellaneous landscapes. i'm not sure how much is going to change (i think cars will go down, food might go up as i'm a huge foodie lol).

during AX, spec jay was going nuts over his 50mm prime lens, i'm debating to try that out and see how it goes. one thing i do know, i'm awful at low light shots right now, both of my lenses are rated around f/5.6

Nitex - are those edited shots? they look pretty damn good.

...is everybody here on a canon??

Prime's are extremely sharp, That is mainly why people love them. Add to that, as you said... You can have a lower aperture, which allows you to take pictures in lower light.

Primes are also sealed, so you don't have to worry about dust getting in them.

Macro shots taken with Tamron 90mm 2.8 Macro

The last photo was taken with a Rokinon 8mm Fisheye

These were just converted in LR ,Don't think I really did any editing on them.

nick911sc's deviantART gallery <----My gallery(My progress from learning to shoot DSLR lol)

I have that Rokinon 8mm fisheye too. Bought it to shoot skateboarding and never really used it. Wish I had more uses for a fisheye but I usually only break it out at parties and stuff for fun shots. Id love to get a macro.
