Unfortunately I am in the same boat on my Quaife install as well. My whine is only under acceleration however.

yeah, i had a whine on acceleration, now i also have a howling noise under heavy acceleration.
My installer called Quaife, and they told him that i should just install a catback exhaust so i didn't have to hear the noise! wtf?!

I have never heard about this with the quaife differentials. I was considering to get one but I think I may wait awhile after hearing all this from multiple people... hope everything works out with you guys.

Daishi9000 07-08-2013 09:22 AM

i don't think it's the quaifes fault, its just the installation of the gears needs to be done correctly.

DR_ 07-08-2013 09:53 AM

It might be Quaife's fault if by bolting it to the ring gear it causing a small amount of runout. I've read one thread on the 350z forum where this was the case.
On my car, the installer said no shims for the backlash were needed, even though he ordered them all just in case. So either he got the backlash wrong, which is the most likely, or there is other possible factors, like the runout.

I should have started with a donor diff like you.

They may be covered by Nissan Warranty but I need a VIN from a frontier with the 4.08 gears in it. I did pay for them out right though in order to get everything together and finished. Could takes weeks/months to find someone willing to let me use their vin.

Mine is all gear related. The quaife performed perfectly and with whining changing situations, even with the new gears that its clear its a gear issue and not the diff issue. Now the quaife sizing does vary from unit to unit which is what makes it so hard to shim. Their machining isnt identical everytime and as we all know, the mm's REALLY count when shimming.

OP, the howling noise is probably because the back lash isn't set correctly. Nothing to do with the Quaife diff. I had the same diff and 4.08 gears installed on my 350z. I had a slight howling noise above 80mph.

Faulty Quaife

Hi Guys. I just had a Quaife installed. It sounds like it was a faulty install. My Quaife has no noise . In fact they are probably some of the quietest Aftermarket LSD that you can install. Its a clutch less design.

Daishi9000 07-09-2013 01:14 AM

yeah, that howling sounds like tires, but it's not.
i'm going to end up man, buying new gears. sucks! i hope i can buy some used ones. Not many people have used gears laying around!

matcop, i hope my quaife install will be noise free like yours soon!
