Dual Polk Audio 8's in Super-Stealth installation

I'm selling this because I've gotten a 3rd woofer from a friend, and need to build a new setup for three woofers! The boxes and panels are all made with 1/2 and 3/4 inch MDF. The carpetting is black and matches blade interior. The grill material is very thick (maybe 14-16ga) corrogated steel - which is strong enough for you to stand directly on top of the woofer!

This is a total stealth-box setup which happens to ditch the spare, so make sure you have a way to get around that. The car is a base/sport, and I'm not 100% sure, but it should fit the other trim packages. The boxes are seperate but of completely equal internal volume. The boxes are fused together for rigidity, and bolt to the spare tire anker to keep them from moving. The panels fit tight and snug with each other and will not pop out. The panels allow easy access to amps and whatnot which I expect you'll have under the front portion of the trunk. The real/large panels can be removed allowing the woofers to perform even louder - the system will probably hit something like ~120DB with the rear panels installed and probably ~125DB with them removed to give you an idea. The setup is designed for rock, hit, techno, electronic, alternative. Rap sounds great but isnt the best for these 8's. They hit hard and fast. They smack the bass right into your stomach and give you a headache. Everyone who has heard these in my car think they are a pair of 10s.

The woofers are 8" "Polk Audio MM840 DVCs". The way I designed this setup is to allow excursion to happen completely underneith the grill, hench the round wood material surrounding each speaker. The grill allows these woofers to extend 0.75 inch forward, which is the x-max of the Polk audios anyway. The polks are some of the better SQ woofers you can get for your money but I realize some people have there preferece, hence I'm going to offer this for sale under two options.

1. You buy everything, including all the wood and woofers for: $400. This gets you going completely all you need is a 1ohm stable amp with about ~800w. My goal is to build a box with 3 of these Polks, but dont mind buying 2 new again if it helps you get going. I will help you install it into your car.

2. You buy just the wood and leave the woofers off the sale. For that, the box and material will be: $225. Each box is 0.75cu, which is larger than spec'd for these Polks; I built the boxes larger than spec to increase power efficiency and hopefully to get lower responce. If you buy the box without the Polks, make sure whatever you get will work. This setup with NOT fit a JL 8w7 or Sundown SA-8. The polks are the next best powerful 8" I could find.

Local pickup only please! I will demonstrate! I live just NW of Atlanta in Marrieta, GA (East Cobb)

I fix any amp worth fixing. Also both the soundstream amps in my car are ones which I've repaired.

Bump. Folks, I really cant drop the price on these. I spent about 30 hours building this setup myself. You have to see and hear it to believe!

Thumbs up for th O/S Sondstream Ref. series!! Best Amps I've ever owned! new stuff made by Power aCRAPstik is CRAP!! These are some awsome subs if they can take that amp @1ohm full on, most put out arround 1500 wrms @14v!!

You mentioned it won't fit jl W7, how about the W6?

Unclemeaty 02-12-2012 07:53 PM

8w6 or 8w3 should probably work. You might want to check this datasheet on the Polk 8" to see if any other subs are a match. fwiw these polks are very very good for SQ, with 1.5" of xmax to xmax excursion they are pretty hard to max up and I'd imagine are better than an 8w3. An 8w7 just might work; it only wont work because the grill above the speaker only alows for about 3/4" of forward woofer movement before the woofer risks hitting the grill. I guess you could modify that with 1/4" shims.

I'm pushing these subs with a Soundstream Reference 1000sx (Which I bought cheap and repaired - HAHA!). These old-school amps Reference amps handle 1/2 ohm per channel and I've got these Polks bridged running paralel all the way where the amp is seeing 1ohm bridged. The amp claims 1000w in this condition. The gains are barely up; TONZ of headroom. This amp can handle what I want to do whenever I want to do it - and I want to go with 3x of these Polk audios next. BTW I'm sure this amp can absolutely rape these polks - but the great part is; the system plays so close to your ears in open space that you can hear any first signs of distress. Tune that junk out and power-up is just wonders for the headroom.

The other amp I have is a SoundStream MC140x which I also repaired. its rated for 35w x 4 which is fun - best part is that its actually better sounding than every other amp I've had on my workbench - Thanks Nelson pass for the prototype design!
