Yes it does. This car should handle like a go-kart.

But... I hope and pray they offer FI for it. I deeply miss having a lightweight, well handling tossable car, but I DON'T miss having a car that can't get out of it's own way.

Those power and torque figures are NOT impressive, not even on a four banger (recall the figures for the S2K), and certainly not with DI and premium fuel.

Or think back to the SR20DET in the Silvia line. ~200hp and ~200torque and ~250hp by the time you got to the s15 model.

Then there is the new MR16DDT engine with 188hp and 177torque...

Granted, these are FI engines and the FT engine is NA so not entirely apples to applese, but I expected better numbers.

If the Subaru verison only has 210-220 hp I will be thoroughly disappointed. But I'll wait patiently to see what the official specs are. It has the potential to be a really cool car.

Ugh. $28,000 base price and only 1 mpg better than our Z. I hope car and driver are wrong about those numbers.

I mean at 20-25k for a base version you are looking at close to 30k for a optioned up model. For that type of money you can buy much better and faster cars. I know this car is supposed to be about handling but thats about the only thing it has going for it. The miata sells a lot because it's cheap and sporty looking, doesn't mean that it's acutally fast. When it comes to most car enthusaists, people want a car that is fast and corners well. For the price range they are talking I would look more at the Genesis V6, Mustang V6, WRX, etc. Time will tell what this car actually becomes and how well it does.

the base needs to be like $22K to make any sense...especially a scion (or suby for that matter).

200 works for me, but I wish it had more torque (~200).

I agree with both of you. Even if the car is lighter by, lets say 500 pounds, it still doesn't make up for the 100+ hp difference. At 28k it is competing with other cars that will out perform it. But if it's cornering performance is equal to the Z and it's styling isn't f'ed up, I might try finding a used one once the Z is paid for.

It depends. With a 2600 curb weight at a 20-22k base price I would say 220-230hp is adequate to be competitive. With a price of 25-28k which is more likely I think 250hp is the bare minimim. The car should also have FI for the simple fact that people like to mod cars and with a N/A 4 banger chances are this car won't really respond to mods all that well.

At 2700 lbs, it would need somewhere around 270 hp to match the Z in acceleration. My guess is that Subaru will introduce a turbo version a year or 2 after the initail car is sold with around a $5K bump.

I wonder if an LSX would fit. Won't be much of a weight penalty at all.
