Bought a Cayman S

Bought a pristine Porsche Certified 2010 Cayman S with 30000 miles. Very rare carbon ceramic brake option, PASM and full Chocolate brown leather. Nice thing about certified car is that it comes with 2 year 50000 mile warranty.

Been wanting a nice 987.2 cayman s for a while as porsche figured out all issues and significantly improved car. Direct injection and much better oiling than original 987 .1 model. The carbon ceramic brakes are just incredible! And Pasm suspension is so cool as with push of button I can go from nice firm sport setting to very comfortable street setting.

It's fun contrast to 370z as cayman S is much more balanced and refined. And car in stock form is just so good! No understeer even with relatively small stock 235/35/19 from tires. And dang can it put power down better than the Z. Z is great value and I loved retro feeling in that car but man forgot just how capable newer Porsches are compared to other cars. There certainly are faster cars but Porsche just nails the balance thing.

^ Equals- 911 lol

The second gen 987 had significant motor upgrades. Direct injection, new cam configuration , much better oiling system. HP jumped from 295 to 320. Few little cosmetic touches. Oh and headlights that actively move to point around turns. Lol. Original sticker for car was $84k new. Got it for about half that cost. PCCB brake option is crazy expensive but then brake rotors only weigh 12 lbs! The porsche warranty made deal for me. It's like a new car. Perfect paint, interior looks new. No chips in windows. Dealer said its cleanest lease return they have seen. I'd agree.

I have been trying to figure out how much lighter a pccb equipped cayman s is compared to regular steel rotors but suspect car weighs less than 3000 lbs. ... Not many new sub 3000 lb cars with over 300 hp these days .

My only real complaint is that the low end is still lacking with this high strung 3.4 liter flat 6 motor. Much better than my old Boxster but on street you really have to commit to go fast. It sort of reminds me of a more torquey s2000. My Mini Cooper S has more comfortable low end than cayman s. Z had a little more Low and mid range with the 3.7 but it's hauling around a lot more car. Top end of porsche is just sweet. Sings up to 7500 rpm where vq starts to feel strained and rough.

Congrats nice upgrade love the Cayman s hopefully I will be able to get one also.

Heck of a find with PCCB, hopefully they just last and you do not have to deal with wear on those. Prices for them in general have fallen but the P tax will always be in effect: will after market step in?

As for torque sure its down a bit but the weight difference is huge IMHO. Worse for us as we have the Roadster, so compared even to the base 2.7 the Cayman never feels under powered: I can only imagine how much better the S feels below 3K :)

Do you have PSE? If not, consider the Carnewal mod to remove factory baffles.

It will tickle the ear pussy on every shift: best mod I have ever done :D

awesome buy!

When are you going to gut it? ;)

Jordo! 10-27-2014 04:02 PM

Congrats, and a nicely detailed review too

Dcocci 10-27-2014 04:32 PM

Congrats! The 987.2 is a fantastic car for the money, and even better with PCCB. It's also a completely different engine from the gen 1, and it's ALOT better as far as problems occurring. Have fun with it!

Thanks! It was time to get in on the 911 action after the Nismo and the CTS-V. After the test drive, where the Porsche sales guy told me to go faster and faster on a twisty road near the dealership, I had to take it home. Its like having a motorcycle but with four wheels, the sound of the flat 6 behind you, the agility, precise steering, precise shifting, braking….after the test drive, which was the first time I ever even drove one, I could understand why people fall in love with driving a 911. I did my research about the IMS issues and the DME counts to be sure this one was ok.

nomodsjk 10-28-2014 12:19 AM

I owned a 06 cayman s and loved it but I have to say the only way it has my z beat is handling. Nothing beats a mid engine for handling but the power is a little lacking and the repair bills I don't miss but its always nice to say " Porsche " just rolls off the tongue! I even like the way the z looks over the cayman and there's no question that our z is waaaaaaaay more comfy for bigger guys! I'm 6ft 1 and 225 and found myself only driving the cayman once a week because it just wasn't comfortable

Wait till you drive the 911 GT3!

Then you would say God probably designed this car for Satan! Ridiculously fast would take you to heaven and hell in 3 sec.

scorp38 10-28-2014 12:42 AM

I want a 993 rs or 993 turbo s when I get one. I have always loved those cars more than any other 911. Beautiful mmmmm

Yes sir that's it

Zoren 370 10-28-2014 12:52 AM

You know they call this as "The Widow Maker"

I don't mind as its a classic 911 design.

No significant electronic aids just pure driving skill will save you.

scorp38 10-28-2014 12:54 AM

Ehh I feel like that's more of the 964 yellow bird that's the widow maker lol. That thing is basicly a death sentence I guwss.

They are 450+ hp substantialy lighter than a basic carrera and not even a widebody car so they are as deadly as a Porsche gets lol

axmea? 10-28-2014 01:02 AM

Congrats!!!!! I'm a fan of the Cayman S.

Limeybastard 10-28-2014 02:02 AM

My friend bought a 2012 M3 Coupe 7 months ago with 40K on the clock for $40K. He just sold that last week and picked up a 2014 Cayman S with 6K on the clock. He sold the M3 for $38.5K and put $20K down for the Cayman S. Its....amazing.

They had a few there, but way out of my price range at least in the 997 model. The 911 is pretty comfy inside and has more headroom than my CTS-V. I considered the 996 turbo, but I hate the interior of the 996 and the scrambled headlights look too. A 997 GT3 would be hot, but given that they are the last GT3 with a stick, the values are holding steady and rising for some. 997 turbos are holding too.

Dcocci 10-28-2014 08:22 AM

We had a REAL widowmaker in the shop a few weeks ago...the 993 GT2. The owner imported it from japan, and it was 1 of 2 GT2's imported to Japan. Oh yea I'm a Porsche tech BTW :)

DCNISMO 10-28-2014 08:53 AM

The GT2 is a killer, turbo, 2 wheel drive, no electronic nannies.....pretty rare car, think I have only seen two of them in the area.

Shamu 11-04-2014 01:14 AM

I have a friend with SCCA SSP class GT2. Very fast car! My street legal 370 z race car was within second on AX courses and within 3 to 5 seconds on 2.8 mile hill climb which made me happy. If I threw TPC turbo on cayman s I might have a car capable of running with gt2

I'd agree with 2006 cayman S but not 2010. I test drove a 2006 cayman S just before I bought my 370z. Didn't like lack of power . The upgraded motor in 2010 cayman S is far more reliable and is more powerful. That extra top end in newer Cayman S is just wicked. I'm 6' 4" tall and 275 and don't find 2010 cayman cabin uncomfortable? I drive car on 80 mile commute most days now. I actually fit in Cayman with my helmet on too! I had to customize seat in my 370z so I would fit and still had to duck my head with helmet on . Cayman no ducking and forward view is awesome in cayman compared to 370 Z. That limited view out of 370 Z was a cool feeling but bugged me too. And it's funny about repairs. I find Z to be very expensive for occasional track use compared to cayman . Caymans brakes are just awesome compared to Z. I have good porsche connections so repair costs for me are actually less than Z. Plus I have 2 year 50000 warranty with porsche certified car. Z is a rocking deal but with porsche certified 987.2 cars going in mid $40k range it's hard to pass up that type of performance bargin!
