actually they kind of are, they are 340~ or so pounds heavier due to a reinforced cockpit and various safety equipment

Well other features that people are thinking that add to the "standard" weight are, required A/C, a couple extra airbags (side), passenger seat needed extra hardware to slide (is static in euro version), and radio plus speakers are standard.

All in all, government stuff added some but forcing the A/C and radio standard is probably 200lbs right off the line.

Could be, but I think it has to do with what the US requires per its safety rules that the Euro does not.
