Thanks for all the posts guys (minus harassment that seems to come in every other thread I start).

Anyone know how dealers are about giving test drives for GT-R's? I remember I asked one a while back ago and they made some comment about not giving test-drives because people won't buy them if they have miles on them at all.

Is this the norm?

tjlazer 04-19-2014 01:28 AM

You will have to test drive a used gtr. Doubt you'll find a nissan dealer that let's you on a brand new one...

Besides the exhaust...those ups gave your Z an edge over GTRs stock handling???

Serious question! I'm curious to know!

Drive the E92 M3 and then the GTR! M3 will feel like a civic! My buddy just got one and we all got out of it thinking why the eff would someone spend so much money on this car? It doesn't feel fast at all. Now maybe an M5... :yum:

At age 28 I would invest the money in a diversified portfolio and build it up. When these investments build up more then use the dividends or income to pay the GTR bill. Leave or re-invest all the capital gains from these investments so your total portfolio balance increases. Be a little more patient, it's not like you have a crappy car now.

As for paying off your mortgage, it depends on what your interest rate is. Example, if your mortgage is 3%, and your investments average an annual rate of return of 8%, why use the investment money to pay off the mortgage? But you have to invest the additional money.

Let your money work for you instead of you working for your money. Short term sacrifice results in long term pleasure while short term pleasure results in long term suffering.

Sorry to be a party pooper but you seem to be in a great position to set yourself up for a nice financial future and get the GTR much easier several years down the road.

Good luck to you on whatever you decide.

Well said, thoughtful mature comment...

It's a bad financial move on your part at age 28 because you should use that money to invest but if it makes you happy then go for it

If you're serious about the GT-R I would suggest contacting MC since he will be able to give you a real owners perspective. He has owned at least 2 R35's

Just assuming over here but since the GTR is pretty much a street/track car. You shouldn't have fuel starvation problems like you do every other day in the Z. So for that reason alone. It's worth getting it.

Heh, yeah I have to admit its pretty annoying. I don't even have that great of tires (hanook V12) yet I still have several times gotten fuel starvation with half a tank of gas in the car =( Granted it always recovers after usually only a few seconds at least when it is at a half tank. I have been stranded to the point of not being able to start the car like 3 times because of the fuel starvation =(

Kind of learned my lesson though I usually take it pretty easy if I am at a quarter tank or less.

Thanks for all the input guys. I am going to go test-drive a GT-R later this week. The company I work for was just acquired by another company and the payout I was expecting is actually about twice of what I originally thought now that I have more details although still no clue on what kind of bump I am expecting for retention at the company. Needless to say affording a GT-R would be easy at this point. I still think I am going to go the used route and look for a 2012 or 2013. I may end up waiting until the 2015 model comes out. We shall see.

This is of course all assuming I go test-drive one and like it :)

Haboob 04-30-2014 11:42 AM

The 2015 is sick. They're already out, btw. Headlamp and tail lamp differences are pretty sweet. Unsure about what's different under the hood though.

Couldn't look inside either on the one that was in the shop.

MC 04-30-2014 12:54 PM

no differences under the hood for 2015 .. just a softer suspension and some noise cancelation to make it more like a touring car in addition to those lights

wish you lived closer to me.. ive got the best used 2012 forsale in existence. Its first black edtion ever built for the US hand signed by the chief engineer with low miles for low 80's

Ah okay. So all cosmetic. Did they update the interior again? I can't remember.

FPenvy 04-30-2014 01:02 PM

better question how are you special enough to have the first 2012 black and 2015 nismo in the US? curiousity has peaked now after reading your sig MC.

they added an Ivory cream interior option in addition to the amber red from last year. thats about it besides a tweak to the graphics in the MFD screen and a carbon look overlay on the speedo gauge

Haboob 04-30-2014 01:06 PM

That's pretty awful (the ivory cream). Maybe it's better on the NISMO, as it goes with that colour theme, I dunno.

Not sure I'd want white on the steering wheel at all, unless I plan to wear driving gloves 100% of the time. Which, if I could afford one, I just may do. :icon17:

FPenvy 04-30-2014 01:08 PM

oh god i would never get that interior lol my light gray in the Z scares me enough to get it dirty or stained.

the white and red are $4K options just for the premium

the NISMO gets it own interior

MC can you elaborate on what realistic maintenace costs for the platform are?

For instance, someone told me to expect a transmission service every 10k?

the transmission fluid calls for every 36K miles if not driven hard to where its over 248 degrees. but realistically I would say do it every other year based on miles or maybe every 15K.. its not THAT expensive its maybe $900-1K including fluids. Its usually good to do Diff fluid at the same time so maybe $350 more.

oil change is no different than a Z especially if you go to where they have a drive over bay it takes 20 mins...

brakes pads last about 25-30K miles if you dont track.. and usually you can get by with just changing pads not rotors once if they arnt badly cracked. GTR rotors get cosmetic cracks the first time you track it but those arnt a big deal

tires are the only inescapable high cost on the car. fronts last about 7K miles with normal daily driving and a few trackdays/autoX mixed in. they range about $550 each. so i usually replace fronts every year and rears every other year. so its not too bad as i rarely replace all 4 at the same time

if you are smart about your maintenance like knowing where get cheap oem fluids and picking up take off brake pads or tires its actually fairly inexpensive considering the car

i stockpiled that stuff haha...ive got 2 sets of OEM tires and a set of brake pads im giving the buyer of my car as the NISMO uses different of both

i've always heard the GTR maintenance costs were extremely high but that doesn't sound bad at all... the fact that the 2015 has a softer suspension and noise cancellation makes it sound very appealing to me. would you recommend one for a daily driver over a luxury coupe/sedan such as a lexus?

$1350 for a tranny and diff fluid change doesn't sound bad at all?

I took at gt-r owner for a ride in my Z and he was tickled pink, he is now looking for a used 370z so he can do the same as I did. I would invest that money for the future, act like you never got it, maybe take 15k and boost the Z. PS get me a job?

houkouonchi 05-02-2014 05:04 AM

Well my decision got a lot earlier. Earlier this week I was told about a bonus but didn't really except anything crazy until the rumor mill at work started saying it would be like years worked at the company times your salary. Seemed way to rediculous to be true but i just got a direct deposit tonight (not even talking about all the payouts from the stock and other **** that hasn't even happened) and it by itself is enough to easily cover a new 2015 GT-R for cash.

I think this just made my decision and I will be going with a new GT-R now. Due to another mistake on what i was originally getting i found out I am getting significantly more so I could get the GT-R and still pay off my house. Needless to say I am pretty damn stolked right now.

Still gonna get a loan and invest the cash. Actually thinking of starting a side business (ISP) and use the cost of the internet connection ($2000-3000/month) as a deduction to the crazy amount of taxes I will be paying this year and enjoy some 1 gig internet to my home as well.

Unbelievable how generous the company has been.

SterlingDrive 05-02-2014 05:36 AM

Come on, man. You don't need to keep putting that much financial info on the internet. It's not necessary for us to have that much data to answer your question. You're either bragging or simply unaware that putting that much info out in public is a bad idea. I'm leaning toward the former.

I had a guy in my section that bragged every day how much money he made and all the money he is going to inherit. Then his wife took it all and now he is broke. :icon18:

He is bragging and it is in extremely poor taste.
