Since Toyota already had a solid rep it was easy to transition to a upmarket brand. Cost is the reason why hyundai hasn't created a luxury brand. Believe it or not but it cost a lot of money to set up new dealerships. Japanese cars were not seen as well made cars when they were first introduced in the states. That perception changed as the japanese made better cars. I would say the first hyundais were pretty crappy cars, but today they make pretty well designed and built cars. Check out the new 2011 Sonata.
