New kia GT4?

So I was doing my morning browsing and came across this:

Kia GT4 Stinger concept car due for Detroit Motor Show 2014 - MSN Cars UK

It seems everyone has taken the idea of going with a smaller displacement...

XiP 01-03-2014 08:11 AM

Nice!

watson853 01-03-2014 08:50 AM

Really excited for this. All this competition for light rwd sports cars is a dream come true. Hopefully Nissans taking notes and is ready to come out on top once again with the new Z.

In all fairness I am sure in a tattered shack on some back woods farm many years ago someone once said, "It's a Datsun, enough said." :stirthepot:

watson853 01-03-2014 09:46 AM

Can't wait to see it Kia has come along way!

I was thinking the same thing but didn't want to say anything lol

Felix 808 01-03-2014 09:58 AM

Interseting. Will be keeping a lookout for this one.

fonzo179 01-03-2014 10:13 AM

Hmm, I gotta hand it to Kia on this one. I didn't see that concept coming at all. In for further details....

Chuck33079 01-03-2014 10:18 AM

Cool looking concept. Hopefully they start cutting less corners on the little things. My gf's Spectra has so many retarded little things that are obviously accounting decisions. Working on it is just a chore.

Fair enough.

Back then it was a Datsun and enough was said. But things change.

However, I'll be dead before KIA can be talked about in the same breath as Nissan, Toyota or Honda. I am sure that day will come, but I won't be here to care.

Minsu 01-03-2014 10:41 AM

I wonder how much change this will cost. (change as in money)

No, the domestic is parked in front of the tattered shack on some back woods farm.

KIA is not a name normally associated with high performance. Let's see how this one shakes out.

I've noticed that the korean automakers were ditching the larger engines and going with turbos to make up the slack. OF course, I was told that Hyundai was buying their V6s from Mitsubishi, so I can understand if they would rather not have to buy when they could build.

My experience with rental Optimas and Sonatas tells me that they don't have the acceleration with the turbo I4s as they did with the V6s. So personally I am not a fan of the trend. There is no replacement for displacement.

Drakonis GTR 01-03-2014 01:03 PM

OF course, Kia has been experimenting with a sports car for several years now. Honestly, I'm surprised that it has taken them this long. But again, this is another concept, so we'll see if they actually go through with it, or just keep making econo-cars.

In some regards, they already are talked about "in the same breath", it's not like we're talking about the original Hyundai Excel. Right now they're borrowing a page or two from the playbook the Japanese Big 3 used in the 80s/90s to gain market share: offer "more" (that's subjective) for less, and include a lengthy warranty.

I've never owned a Kia, and likely won't anytime soon, but why the ire toward them?

As a Japanese car enthusiast I'm glad the Korean competition is there to keep the Big 3 from getting complacent, as they had been over the last decade (especially Toyota).

This^^ Competition is a very good thing.

Eclipz 01-03-2014 04:50 PM

Soon the Korean cars will be on top of the food chain.

well said. Can't wait to see what Kia's boffins can do. May not be a huge success, but it's a good sign when a company is thinking forward like this.

OK never mind it's ugly.

If this is the side view?

Cell 01-03-2014 10:51 PM

It's nice to see more sports cars coming out for bigger competition.

What I would like to see is more competition against the EVO/STI and maybe even a car company coming out with something to compete against the GTR at a cheaper price.

I'm guessing GTR are just letters to you. Lol

The "but it's a Kia" comments and "no replacement for displacement" comments are kinda ignorant IMO. I may have agreed with you in 1994 ;-)

I agree to the first part but not the second.

There is no replacement for displacement.

This is why people go with bigger displacement to make bigger power. Look at some people that turbo their cars and also modified their engines to increase the displacement.

Look at some people with large displacement engines that also add forced induction.

Lol, just being a smartass.

Anyway, my argument is that I wouldn't write-off a new sports car
just because it uses a turbo-4. I imagine a BRZ-type car with FI and better appointments/quality would be a pleasure to own.

Looks pretty nice to me.

. The GTR is the fastest production car in the world. The GTR FOR NOW, in current events. Kills the Displacement argument.
When someone else can build a faster production car. Your point will be validated once again.
