What a Car Enthusiast Looks Like to Everyone Else
Found this while reading a story Vertigo posted earlier. Definitely don't see car enthusiasts like this, but I can see how others may. |

I have a friend that explains the finer details of his $225 coffee grinding machine. He is a car guy too so maybe it's a little different. Additionally I don't drink coffee either.

This washing machine story can relate to just about anything that someone is passionate about. It can be a washing machine, coffee maker, car, photography, (insert your passion here), or whatever gets your juices flowing. We have folks where I work that are really into brewing their own beer, and I couldn't be less interested about this. Now, get me talking about cars, yeah buddy .
So, as long as people are different, there will be "different strokes for different folks."

I think driving a car and washing laundry are disparate.
Entertainment vs chore... While I understand that some people think driving/maintaining a car is sort of like a chore, but I cannot imagine that a sane human being considers doing laundry entertainment. I would guess that people who aren't into cars view car enthusiasts in the same way that I view people who enjoy politics or knitting. It's not my thing, but I can understand in a small capacity that people enjoy it. I cannot understand someone who thinks of laundry as entertainment unless it's in some bassackwards manner like their life sucks in all other aspects, and laundry is their release, which imo demonstrates they're not sane.

It's my assumption and feeling that the washing machine is just an analogy and he did not in fact meet a "wash-head" or encounter these 4 washing machines, etc. I think the author would have been better served *actually* looking up someone else into something as much as car enthusiasts are into cars rather than making it up.
I know this is a humor piece, but it could have been humorous without describing car mechanics with the backdrop of a washing machine, and instead replace it with something that at least holds up beyond being used as a silly analogy. Go to a Linux Users Group and try to appreciate their use of *nix over Windows. Talk to an audiophile about a proper home stereo setup. Talk to a crossfit/personal trainer about how to eat better day to day. Find an IT security nut and ask them how to stay safe and secure on the Internet. Most of these topics when talking to real enthusiasts will quickly turn into an avalanche of information that non-enthusiasts cannot process; they'll go glassy-eyed, start nodding, and take the first chance they can get to say, "Thanks," and move on. They may blog, tweet, or just talk about you later to their partner/friends about the nut they talked to earlier who is way too into xyz... |
