Infiniti Q50 S
Just got done with a test drive and I gotta hand it to 'em. It is worth every penny they are asking for it. The one I drove was the 3.7 so the similarities are all there and the paddle shifters are identical to the 7AT. It was like being home but only in a more refined daily driver aspect. The interior was fantastic, the seats were to die for and I could sit completely straight up without my head smacking the headliner (something that is becoming very tiresome in the Z). The nannies weren't happy with me through the corners but being a test drive I wasn't going to turn them off. But it never cut power. Just kept the wheels in check. Suspension was smooth and very compliant. Was very predictable and good road feel which was unexpected. It really liked to haul and was incredibly nice at the higher speeds. The interior seems small but is roomy as can be. The controls are in the perfect spots.I just can't say enough good things about it.
I did not drive the hybrid bit 360 horse and better mileage is something to write home about. I will be driving one when I get back to the east coast. If all goes well I'm going to purchase one. don't know if anyone else has gotten into one yet but I highly recommend it. Tell me what you think. |
Sounds awesome. Your review is in the family of what i was expecting. The value factor of intfiniti quality is highly understated in the automotive world. Would you consider the interior to be a huge leap forward from the G series or a minor leap?
I want to get my test drive in but that won't happen for a while. No time. My life has received another majorcomplication, where i won't have the time for at least 3 months to do things like test drives. |
Just traded my 2011 370z 6mt w/ Sports Package for a Q50 Hybrid/Sport. I definitely made the right decision, this car is amazing!!!

As much as I love throwing the Z around, I'm fully intending on trading her in very soon. It's rare I find a car that I feels completely perfect. The Q is it. Even despite my hatred for touch screen instruments in cars. |
Wow, I didn't expect the Q to be this good. I think I'll check out the dealership. Great review OP.

Thats the "elitist" pro-germaphile BS that chatters through the forum and in car society that always has people underrating Infiniti and swaying peoples expectations/opinions. Infiniti was working hard on this car. My expectations for the Q50/60 are high... This Z, in 2016, won't disappoint either. |

@ OP...can you post pics of the particular model you drove?
Interested. Ty! :tiphat: |
The optional Q50S rims look sick... a $1900 option.

Hadn't seen the wheels before. Gotta say that would really helped.
I looked at the Q50 this weekend at my local dealer. The roofline is a little high for my tastes (very tall side glass to my eye), but that is just my opinion. Otherwise, the car is solid. The lines are great (need to see it in person because pictures don't do justice with this car). I wouldn't mind trying one out. Don't know that I would ditch my Z for it though. I have the benefit of being short so I don't worry about interior space as much :) |
I don't think this is the type of car you replace your Z with unless you absolutely need the space and you truly want the added luxury. But it would be something i would add to the garage as a family/DD.

I know Infiniti makes great vehicles, I just wasn't expecting a brand new model to be this good. Of course, I'll reserve my judgment until I get behind the wheel of one.

Only reason why I was talking about replacing the Z is if I'm in the situation and I have to downsize to one car, I wasn't sure if it would completely scratch the sporty/performance itch or not.
On the other hand, they have made mention of a 6MT powertrain potentially coming available for it (or at least I thought I read that somewhere), and if they rock epic lease deals like they have for the G37 and I'm far enough out of negative equity on my Mazda then I will pick one up without a doubt. My buddy landed a $249/mo lease on a G37 Journey with Sport Appearance pkg + navigation. That is a hell of a car for that money. 12k miles a year for 2 or 3 years. |
I have a feeling what's going to happen is auto trannies will be standard and manuals wil be a cost option down the line. I expect the 6mt in the Q50 the same year the Q60 is released. I'm sure the 60 will have manual.

I was looking at the luxury sport sedan line - BMW and Audi are the last ones out there offering a MT. In fact, the 2014 Audi S4 only gets a 6MT option in the US... not even in Europe! |

Only 20% of the market buys manuals, but 20% of 1,000,000 is still 200,000. That's a viable number and a considerable demand. Manuals a rent going anywhere. The halt is all market strategy. |
Here is a couple of pics of my Q50 Hybrid/Sport.

AFAIC, that is THE color for that car. THE color.
Beautiful ride!!! Tint is necessary. Would love to see the chrome trim around the windows blacked out as well. |
Nice Nice car!

That Direct adaptive ******** sucks... don't do it. If they don't have a steering column option pass.... MT tend to understand the philosophy behind Nissan infiniti products.... if they say DAS sucks... It damn sure sucks.... I hate this Technology I hate EPAS I HATE E-E-BRAKES. I hate E SPORTS CARS... It's an abomination to ENTHUSIAST cars. |
I just went on Infiniti website...i had NO idea they made 4 banger i4 for the Q50. Thats ALMOST as bad as Lexus V6 with 200 hp.

At least the infiniti is approx 250lbs lighter than the lex. |

^ that hurts....

After reading through that review, it's precisely what I expected. They had the opportunity to drive both a DAS car and non-DAS car, but chose to lambast the DAS car while not commenting on the standard steering, which skews the overall review.
Skip the DAS car and add a LSD to this car, and it's a serious contender. I've said that from the beginning. After I take care of my family's housing situation, I will decide whether to keep my 3.7 RWD or move to a Red Sport based upon what's available during this car's full mid-cycle refresh. I really anticipate a dual clutch being offered at some point... but I'm ok with the current 7AT. If the aftermarket responds to the red sport and Quaife drops an ATB differential for this thing, I'm all in. The car is great - just missing a couple pieces. |
Motor Trend Review
Hi expectations from MT but pleased with speed and power. MT was clearly harder on the brand and deservedly so. It is hard and takes a lot to go after well established brands like BMW and Mercs. I understand what MT is saying about the need for infiniti to be clear on what they intend the car to be. As for the motor - would love to see this on a Z. The Q was a tad under 3900 lbs. so just imagine that. |

That's a super solid deal. I'd rather have that than a 320i all day long. PLENTY of torque for the morning commute. |
Yea twin turbo 3 liter 6 with 300 crank? Yawn. Geezuz a 2008 G35 has more power.
|
I went to an auto show a few weeks ago and sat in a Q60 and i was overwhelmingly pleased. it was probably my favorite sub $60k vehicle there, it seemed well worth its price. The interior quality was fantastic and everything in the car seemed in place and well integrated. All i have to do now is drive one :driving:

Like seriously dude.A 340I is 320HP and starts cat $48k. You're not looking at this in the current market |

The horsepower isn't the figure... it's the torque that's peaked from 1600-5200 RPM. And it's already well established that the VR30DDTT is significantly underrated from the factory. They've dyned the 300hp version of the current Q50 with 290 at the wheels on California gas.

I do like the interior and the exterior is much more buttoned up and tidy in person than the current car. Still, if it came down to going forced induction on my current ride, I'd probably opt for the Q60RS instead, add a few choice components and hope there are better tuning solutions on the horizon than what we currently have. Or maybe wait and see if they release a higher spec version. |

I test drove an Audi S3 which was an impressive car but it too had zero steering feel. Edit: One thing I left out is that it actually put the power down better, with less wheel spin, than my current car with Pilot Super Sports, pretty much the same size tire in the rear. Still not perfect but worth noting. |
