woo-hoo another epic car ruined by slapping a meaningful name on a pathetic chassis.

I'm almost as excited as I was when they moved the Wrangler to a mini-van chassis.

Since they used JK for the chassis code then, you figure this one will be LOL?

Damn... I don't know a whole lot about these types of vehicles. So what went wrong exactly with the new chassis?

School me on this... please. :tiphat:

I know but I'm confused. Where you just joking when you said off road capabilities to rival Wrangler?

shouldn't be difficult considering the JK chassis isn't exactly known for it's offroad prowess.

XJ and TJ were the last real Jeeps. TBH I doubt we'll ever see a real one again.

Well maybe rivaling was a stretch, but you sure as hell cant get far on rocks in the 13 liberty from what I've heard. All of the affordable jeeps aren't very good for rock climbing. But this new Cherokee is supposed to be...

the short answer is it is a road going unibody instead of the abusable one on the old cherokee.

So with body mounts and a lift kit, the JK would still suck for off-road?

suck is probably harsh, but the chassis simply isn't made for it.

Off-roading is interesting because most cars are far more capable than people realize. It's not so much a lack of ability to accomplish tasks as it is a lack of durability when tasks are not executed correctly.

You'd be surprised to see what, say, a stock FJ or something can do. Unfortunately, you come down on some rocks wrong and wind up with permanent damage.

Oh jumpin' back in quick. I test drove the Grand Cherokee overland summit. All I can say is WOW!!!!

Went to turn in lease this past Monday and they had a used 2012 overland on the lot. Black metalflake, with a brown interior, really sweet.

I test drove it and loved it. I want to get one. I bought my wife's altima straight out so I have Good equity in that car for a trade or to sell. I've always wanted to get into off-roading. Just never had the time and money. Sports cars and jeeps? lol Money pit. I wouldn't mind a Grand Cherokee limited or Wrangler. I love the comfort/ability of the cherokee. i love the versatility/ruggedness of the wrangler. Also, the Wrangler is more affordable in full on, Off road guise.

But now I'm even nervous to buy one with Red's comments. Maybe I need to do more research on Jeep vehicles before plunging in.

I want to get into off roading and rock climbing too

Have you looked at the 4runner trail edition? It has a body-on-frame chassis and you can get KDSS too :yum:

If you want to get into off-roading, buy an XJ Cherokee. It's more capable than the Wrangler, which surprises most people. It's cheap, the 4.0L engine is bulletproof, and if you put a rock through the oil pan, you did it on a $4000 car, not a $40,000 car.
