Toyota

How many of you all like Toyota's engineering and cars a lot ?

I hadn't driven one in a few years until driving my friend's 2010 Toyota Highlander Limited. It's got a 3.5 liter V6 w/ 270 horsepower. Pearl White exterior over light grey Leather Interior. I was surprised that the transmission had both SPORT mode and Manual Shifting(-/+) using the console shifter.
I love Toyota's attention to detail, refinement and precision in their engineering. So nice. . .

DarkJak 03-18-2013 01:34 AM

I like them as reliable, practical cars that are well thought out for the user.
That said, FRS aside, there's no chance of my buying any of their current models until I have to (baby). And even then, I'd go for something more special if possible, like a hot hatch or a nice rwd wagon. Because life is short, and Ill probably only own less than a dozen cars before I die, so I'm going to make every one count.

DEpointfive0 03-18-2013 02:48 AM

I LOVE Toyotas, our family has been pretty much been Lexus/Toyota cars only until my Maxima, 370Z, and another Maxima...

I hate to say it... But I fúcked up... I will never buy another Nissan again unless they somehow win me over big time...

EDIT: I HATE the FRS/BRZ

/Angelo350Z/ 03-18-2013 02:52 AM

Toyotas are great, reliable cars. Too bad they've become boring in last decade. Sure, they came out with a few exciting Lexus models, but they're slowly becoming the Buick of Japanese cars. Honda's not far behind in the snooze factor. So sad.

I think the brand is slowly shedding that image it's had for many years.

While the LFA was pretty ridiculous w/ it's V10 screamer, carbon fiber weave, and astronomical price-tag, the IS-F, FR S/86, and GS350 F sport are starting to turn the wheels in the right direction. I believe that even the next gen. Corolla and Camry will be much better driving cars.

their slogan is pretty fitting: The Pursuit of Perfection

I agree completely!
Lexus made the ISF, and I don't count the LFA because they only made 500 and it's $400k

The reason why I chose a Maxima the first time over a Toyota Avalon was that Toyota just doesn't get enough out of their motors...
Both have 3.5L engines, Toyota gets 268HP leading to a 0-60 of 7.9 seconds and the Maxima has 290HP and a 0-60 of 5.8 seconds

The second time I chose a Maxima was just because I think it looked good and I don't like the 2013 Avalon, but now I pray, every day, that both cars get totaled... And my fat àss will RUN to the nearest Lexus/Toyota dealershit and say:
( Click to show/hide )

I agree with this too...

At the same time, I will say I'm biased towards Lexus/Toyota.
I own an ISF as well... It's got about the same miles as the 370Z... Both are driven REALLY hard, the ISF maybe more, because the smile of flooring it and hearing that roar is intoxicating... Only problem it's had... A $1400 brake job...
The 370Z... Problem after problem...

I'm glad I bought the warranty on the Nissan, I'm glad I didn't waste my money on the warranty on the Lexus.

Yeah, i hear ya ^ ^ . I was so impressed with the 2010 Highlander's 3.5 liter V6 in manual shift mode. It has less power than Nissan's Maxima of the same year, yet exact same displacement V6. It also weighs more in its SUV/truck frame.
Despite these shortcomings, I much prefer Toyota's drive-train and driving dynamics. Something about their attention to detail, refinement, and utter drive for perfection in excellence .

Damn, it looks like you like Lexus/Toyota more than me! LOL!!!

My dad has had 3 Highlander's in... 12 years, awesome cars, we BEAT THE SHÍT out of them, and my dad ain't your scheduled maintanence kind of guy... LOL!!! And they all worked well until their deaths... (ALL totaled)

His coworker had a 2001 that he just got rid of last year... It had OVER 400,000 miles, granted all highway miles, but holy crap, it's still a lot, and it only started to burn about a quart of oil every 5k miles after it hit 350k miles...
Same with my best friend's Lexus RX300, 2003, 268k miles, and that thing KICKED LIKE A MULE, LOL

bigsix 03-18-2013 04:25 AM

NIce ! dude. . . my Friend wants his to go 500,000 miles. I told him as long as he maintains it well, the engine should be able to go that distance--- he's got 50k on it now. Stil in its childhood, the engine:p

DEpointfive0 03-18-2013 04:28 AM

I agree, but it's still amazing that even their automatic transmissions last that long too
That highlander didn't have any fluid changes, but then again it wasn't changing gears every 30 seconds... Then again, the Lexus, daily driven in the city, and when my friend himself drove it... He BEAT it, lol

FairladyZ 03-18-2013 04:40 AM

My friends 1994 Camry had 455000 miles. Still ran strong, only upgraded because they felt it was time. It didnt give out yet.

My parents had an 88 Camry which was one of the first cars they bought so they thought it be great just to keep it around. It had about 250k miles and still ran strong with no problems and all it got were oil changes. They finally got rid of it just because it looked way to old. Up until it was given away for donations it still ran strong.

For reliability I think Toyota/Lexus knows wtf is up.

SurfDog 03-18-2013 04:45 AM

I have a Toyota FJ and love it. Best snow car out there and I should know (i live at 9000 feet ) easy maintenance reliable. Awesome. (needed $2,500 suspension to bring out its Best)

I have a 09 370Z and love it! Best street car I've ever had.... but it needed $10k in random upgrades to really make it shine. (clutch, flywheel, oil cooler, full breather mods etc...)

Ive had a:
91 Toyota Pathfinder
77 Datsun 280Z
89 Toyota forerunner
97? Toyota Exterra

I loved all these cars. The only car I've ever owned and hated was a 94 Ford probe that my Ex dumped on me...

Toyotas are rock solid. Nissans are diamonds in the rough but really amazing cars.

I have owned and loved both, but if you want solid and reliable go with Toyota. They run forever with no hassles.

Of course they don't make racers. I've driven the FRS. It is nimble and light... and weak like a Miata. Don't kid yourself that it compares in any way with a 370.

you hit it on the head. I'd buy the whole nissan line-up 2 times over before touching Honda-Acura or toyota-lexus vehicles.

shadoquad 03-18-2013 08:14 AM

Toyotas are ok. Cheap reliable boring family cars.

They can be fun to drive, but so can most any modern car. Every boring joe daily driver can have an AT with sport shift dropped in it.

I loved the Toyota of the 80's and 90's. The first gen MR2 was a blast to drive. I can only imagine that's the same for the next MR2, then the MR-S, and of course the Supra.

I want Toyota to get back to making enthusiast vehicles instead of only making slow cars to congest the suburban highway.

Lexus is a little different, but not by much. I don't pay that money for a BMW, I would certainly not drop it on a more boring Lexus. Also, personal biases being what they are, put a manual transmission in one of those overweight dogs, would ya?

Also, I think the FR-S is a fantastic direction for the company. They should have released it as a Toyota FT-86, but what's done is done.

Edit: I forgot to touch on Toyota Trucks, which I understand are excellent. I'm just not a truck guy.

cossie1600 03-18-2013 12:25 PM

I love my hybrid vehicles. Are they fun to drive? Not really. Yet they are just so reliable and they are great values. I have 80K miles on my 2010 Prius, only thing I have had to do is change tires, oil and replace a bad hatch strut. Car is as solid as ever and it gets 50mpg.

I had a MR2 turbo, I thought the car was overrated. It wasn't reliable and the driving position is just weird. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to shift the pedals closer to the center of the car!

the_student 03-18-2013 01:23 PM

I love my 4Runner!!!

Best baby car to get...if you dont want a crossover or a minivan imo lol.

I've driven only Toyota's minus a Dodge Dakota as my first vehicle. Last one being a Toyota Tacoma I traded in on the Z. I do miss that truck.

JungleZ 03-18-2013 06:16 PM

I'm a Honda guy all the way, integra prelude s2000 i owned. Even though Honda sucks now no more economy enthusiast cars or rwd.. But they still own Nissan in terms of quality it's not even close. Toyota for sure too although I like the old Tacoma and supra only.

I really hate to bash Nissan so much but dam they cheap out in so many places

Yeahhhhh... I agree...

My biggest thing with Nissan, that inherently every Nissan has, WHY DO THEY ALL HAVE TO RATTLE?!?!?!
My damn headliner rattles!!!
And I know the 370Z is a sports car and we "want to save weight" but why can't you put SOME sort of insulation for the sound???

JungleZ 03-18-2013 07:49 PM

dude i got a 2005 Frontier, the seats rattled the paint chipped off. The tranny jerked around the gas mileage was embarrassing. The only good thing was a 4.0 VQ Engine that had torque. We still have the truck just to have a truck but no way in hell does it compare to a Toyota Tacoma..

JungleZ 03-18-2013 07:50 PM

Honda Prelude most reliable car i had, only issue was h22 oil consumption which mine didnt really have.

sucks for you guys, i will admit my 2002 altima rattled a little after a while, but after i upgraded to a 2005 altima 3.5 in over 160,000 miles i never had any problems with rattles and the same in my Z, the 33k miles i had it i never had that issue....my 96 civic on the other hand has plenty of things that rattle even with it only having 132,000 miles on it, gotta say it gets great gas mileage though lol

bdavis89 03-18-2013 08:15 PM

If Toyota had kept the Supra I wouldn't own a 370z.

i dont hate them, but i do have bad memories of my parents' 1990-1991 toyota 4 runner which had the most mechanical issues out of all the cars we owned but on the other hand the 96 corolla that we owned for a short time later on was an overall good car especially when it came to MPG's

oops that was a *Nissan* Pathfinder... with a bent frame from driving it into a USMC 2 man fighting hole during training in Quantico Va. I only had it 2 weeks before I bent it grrr. Even though it was never quite straight, it was a great truck.

Toyota is my favorite car brand.

Supra was my childhood dream car but I couldn't afford to get one

I got a used camry as my first car and didn't have any problems with it. My second car was a 4runner.
Got an Acura TL after the 4runner and had so many problems and wasn't impressed with performance.
Got a highlander after the TL, awesome SUV and is currently my daily driver.
Bought a 370z because I wanted a sports car and it looks kinda similar to a Supra. Currently saving up money to buy another toy once I get bored with the Z.
Originally started saving for a GT-R, but I really think my next car will be a Toyota. I'm waiting to see what the next gen IS-F will look like :yum:

Once I save up enough money, I think I may keep the 370z as my daily driver, sell my highlander and get a Land Cruiser and turn it into an offroad/rock crawling toy
not really sure yet, just depends on how good the next gen IS-F is or if I still have supercar fever lol

dP3NGU1N 03-19-2013 12:34 AM

I had 3 camrys and a MKIII supra before my Z. My family is all toyotas. I'm so sick of camrys, you won't catch me ever buying one for myself. Even if I need a sedan I'm going to look long and hard for something more inspired than that POS...

Akmcmahon 03-19-2013 01:00 AM

*sigh* I used to love Toyota. From their All-Trac Celica to the mighty MKIV Supra, I loved their cars. After the Supra though, they took a massive decline in my book. They're still pretty reliable and low maintenance vehicles. But they are fugly and boring as all hell! I've also come to find that Camry drivers are mostly horrible drivers and a$$holes to boot. I got a Camry rental when I owned a 2009 Altima. I have to say the Altima blows it away. So much more for the money and drove nicer IMO. I just think Toyota has gotten complacent being on top for so many years that they no longer care about their customers. The Supra could still be my favorite car I've owned. But the Z is growing on me every day. Why Toyota stopped making the 2JZGTE was the dumbest thing they ever did. That motor was amazing!

Actually, I correct myself. Camry drivers aren't as bad as Prius drivers. WTF? They speed more than any other car I've seen. They act like they own the road and have 500hp under the hood. Turn that ugly POS down a notch b!tch.

YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH, SIR! I wish that the prius drivers that I meet on the road drove like you describe. I want those fuckers out of my way. I can't tell you how often I have to weave through a group of cars on the highway just to find that all the traffic is caused by some little **** prius going 50 in the fast lane. I have yet to meet a prius driver that speeds, those little ***** are constantly in my way. They can all die for all I care. What kind of hippy **** drives a prius anyway?

Ugh angry words. If you drive a prius I hate you. I'll like you again when you're back in your Z. (Yes, bro I am so mad!)

My friend drives a Pry-us, he drives like a MANIAC!
He used to drive a G35, but he gave it up for the Pry-uswhen his mom got diagnosed with cancer because it has a better ride (she has multiple myeloma which caused her spine to literally shatter) and the cancer center is 50 miles each way

But for the most part, Pry-us drivers drive like their car doesn't get enough MPG, LOL

Contrary to some beliefs... Not all AT shifted cars are made the same. Some are exciting, others are boring as shyt.

I have no issue with toyota's of they past. They are legendary. I have issues with Toyota's since around 2002-2003.

Jasonle 03-19-2013 06:33 AM

i love both my toyota's. The 1998 avalon has a 199K + miles and still running good. The 1995 supra (got a half a month ago) has a 115K miles and still runs good so far.

Wife's Prius has been trouble free and bullet proof for 5 years. No SLU issues there! :)
