They do use multiple drivers, but they are all amateurs, for it to be really fair they would have to borrow the Stig for a few days.
Considering 1 second quicker makes sense that Nissan did a good job on improving the 350z.

In terms of C&D's comparison, that wouldn't make much difference. It would be placed before BMW z4M.

84 3:11.1 BMW X5 M LLT 2/12
85 3:11.7 BMW Z4 M COUPE LL2 8/07
86 3:12.0 NISSAN NISMO 370Z LL2 2/10
87 3:12.5 NISSAN 350Z TRACK LL1 11/06

If compared to the $33k Camaro SS with a 3:09.5 time
and the $32k Mustang GT 5.0 with 3:08.6 time, the 370z isn't really a bargain.

But at the end of the day you have to ask yourself... am I buying this car because of its track times?

I know I didn't.

A bargain, the Z is not. These track numbers are subjective, Most cars on the list can lose to the 370z on another day or in another track. Too many variables to make these numbers concrete performance stattistics.

I know you autocross & such so this isn't really directed at your experience but... I don't thing most people are good enough drivers to get the full potential out of much slower cars than the Z. I'm not. I have no problem admitting it. If I were, I'd be a professional driver in auto racing, or a stuntman, or something like that. Most of these jokers going on about these magazine times are just like me except they won't admit they're not professional driver caliber.

Is the Z perfect at 9- 9.9/10? I dunno, I don't drive it like that, I'm not pretending it's a race car. It's got ample grip on a warm dry day and it's damned fun when you push it a little - and it's still a good cruiser when you're not.

And for what it's worth, I love the "heavy" feel of the steering. One thing I really hate about most cars I drive these days is how slow and over-boosted the steering feels.

it's too bad C&D doesn't have competitions over which cars look the best parked at a Starbucks.

Summary of everything: people need to stop looking too deep into numbers because of the variables related in them. Additionally, stop reading too much into car magazine reviews/hype. 99% of sports (sporty) car owners spend little time driving their cars at the limits so we need to stop worrying about it.

Enjoy the car you have. You don't have to love it, but enjoy it for what it is. Every car comes with compromises. If people understood that, then silly comparisons would end.

A pro driver got the ZR1 around the track 6 seconds faster than they did so you have to take all of their times with a grain of salt. 6 seconds is a lot of time on a race track.

When I see comparisons like this these type of questions come to my mind, just wanted to bring this subject to discussion.
At the end of the day I bought the 370z mainly because the way it looks and its configuration:

It is a 2 seater, small agile car. The way, I think, sports car should be.

I could have gone for a Mustang or a Camaro SS but didnt fit with my -ideal- sports car.

Mag times are pretty good at telling you what a particular group of amateurs were able to accomplish on a particular day.

That may or may not be an interesting piece of information to a given person, I guess.
