I like the Evo 10 and always wanted a 3000GT VR-4. It would be sad to see the company go, even though their lineup is a bit of a let down these days.
The 2nd gen Eclipse wasn't really the best at anything, but it was a relatively affordable "sporty" two-door that looked really great. The mid to late 90's wasn't exactly the best years for sports cars considering this was introduced just as the 300ZX, RX-7 & Supra were saying their goodbye's in North America. If you look back at when the Eclipse was worth looking at, you'd see there wasn't a lot to choose from. This had the styling of a Japanese import without the pricetag of the true sports cars. The 3rd and 4th generation Eclipse just flat out tried too hard and look like crap. They destroyed the one thing going for it, the design.

Most japanese imports that were worth buying cost between $30-50k, Entry level bimmers of the time handled like a dream but were slow and entry level was $25k. The initial eclipse models in turbo form hit 60 in about 6.7 seconds with a high 14 quarter and had all wheel drive and cost about 19k, 6k lower than the comp. Turbos were small but piping was there, and upgrading those types of cars pre-Fast & Furious was cheap. Mitsu was looked down upon by most upper middle class citizens of the day who expected out the box power and simple mods for big gains... Guys who didn't mind elbow grease. Can do some damage with the early eclipse with a little bit of money. NOT saying mitsu's were track Gods... but if well modified? They held there own. Were decent handlers and for budget conscious car buyers they served its pupose. That's why I called the starion and early eclipses resptectable. |

Both Suzuki and Mitsubishi have truly failed in US market. They never really found sustainable niche. Being cheaper Honda or Toyota isn't sustainable strategy. Evo was about only thing Mitsubishi did well but they never really capitalized on that cars success. And never did anything to grow brand.

Thats very true... But, this country without the Evo would lose an important entry in the sports car arena. The Evo is highly underrated as a AWD sport entry. I don't want to see it go. Suzuki, There motorcycles do damage here but there cars, they just don't compete well compared to other Asian brands. |
