Infiniti To Change All Models to Q or QX (WTF!)

Infiniti goes back to the Q - Autoweek

Quote:

Infiniti will completely rename its product portfolio next summer, returning to the letter “Q” from the brand's early history for every car, and “QX” for every Infiniti crossover and SUV.

The company is undertaking the change to prepare for a broader array of future products around the world, says Johan de Nysschen, worldwide president of the brand.

All of Infiniti's other products will follow under the new naming structure over the course of about eight weeks with their 2014-model introductions.

-The M sedan will become the Q70

-G37 coupe and convertible will become the Q60.

-EX crossover will become the QX50

-FX crossover will change to the QX70.

-The current full-sized QX56 SUV, with its 5.6-liter V8, will become the QX80.

Again, WTF!

Weird...

HArturo319 12-18-2012 08:45 PM

That seems unnecessary.

b1adesofcha0s 12-18-2012 09:06 PM

It's retarded. They're trying to be like Audi.

kenchan 12-18-2012 09:08 PM

That is because of this:

But now Nissan has placed former Audi man Johan De Nysschen at the helm, and he knows where he wants the company to compete: He wants them to take down his former employer.
In the end it will be a great move for Infiniti, it will great a real brand image like many others have. Defining out levels of cars and specific groups like SUV v sedan.

SS_Firehawk 12-19-2012 08:28 AM

Don't forget Mercedes uses a very familiar naming convention as what Infiniti uses now, somehow people aren't confused by theirs... Awful excuse to undermine the consumers ability to understand the brand model

It might be in the long run, but for now I hate it!

So the team Strictly G's will have to change their names to Strictly GQ's?? :roflpuke2:

b1adesofcha0s 12-19-2012 09:10 AM

I guess the new "G" mod will be to put G emblems/badges on the car :icon17:

Tazicon 12-19-2012 09:13 AM

Can I rebadge my car to a Q60 now? Hummmmm I like it! .............................................. not

Dear Infiniti Fans,

We love you dearly. And we know you love the brand. Which means it’s only natural that you may feel surprised by the announcement that we plan to change our nomenclature philosophy. No one likes change.

It was a tough decision, we like our current model names as much as you do. But we had no choice but to change. Let me explain.

1. We are embarking on a massive product offensive, and these new cars need names. There are no suitable combinations of Alphanumeric naming options remaining which are not already trademarked by another automaker. In order to expand our line up with the fascinating new models we are developing, we must create a more flexible nomenclature philosophy.

2. Our new advanced technology engines under development will be smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient yet more powerful. And we will introduce some exhilarating performance machines in the future. I'm sure you will agree, it would be a bit odd to have a powerful, luxurious and refined V8 powered Infiniti M56, then position a new high-tech 550+ horsepower performance flagship for the Infiniti M range above it, using a potent charged induction V6, but then call it Infiniti M30, which we would be obliged to do, following our current naming logic.

3. Infiniti is becoming a global brand now, we are already active in almost 50 countries, the majority only very recently. Our new customers are unfamiliar with the brand and struggle to understand our range hierarchy. Is a JX above or below an FX? Where does an EX fit? What is the relationship between G and Infiniti M? Research confirms the majority of newcomers to our brand consider the naming to be somewhat arbitrary and confusing.

4. Infiniti owns the naming assets of Q plus double digit, and QX plus double digit. And it is a permanent part of our heritage.

So the solution is pretty straightforward - use Q for cars, QX for crossovers, and double digits in increments of ten, to denote hierarchy, linked to the price point of the model, not size and not engine displacement. And no, we won’t call all-wheel drive models Q50X or QX50X. The fact that a model may feature four wheel drive, will be indicated by specific badging describing this feature on the car, and is not part of the model name.

The really exciting implication of all this, is that it prepares the way for the introduction of several fascinating new models, above and below the current line up, a wider range of powertrains, including some truly stunning performance cars in our future.

So there is only good news for all Infiniti fans around the globe. We are working very hard to bring you great products, a great brand and a compelling ownership experience. And we are really confident you will love the new Q50. It's simply that good.

Warmest regards

Johan de Nysschen
President

Infiniti Motor Company Limited

It seems to simplify things greatly in an innovative way. Is this new "Q50" the AMG-fighting Sedan ?!? I'm excited for their new products(!)

Waiz 12-19-2012 03:24 PM

lol that the head of Infiniti had to apologize for the changes

It is absurdly confusing and doesn't allow differentiation of models. I give them a year and the they will switch back

phelan 12-19-2012 06:21 PM

What's so confusing?

Audi A3, A4, A5, A6, A8 standard models are all instantly recognizable in my head.

By the same token, BMW uses 3, 5, and 7 numerals for their major models, and then use digits afterwards to denote power.

Saabs were all 9(somethings).

I fail to see the big deal. Then again, I just don't give a sh*t.

I think it'll be weird at first because we are so used to the current names, but in a couple years it won't be a big deal.

frost 12-19-2012 10:07 PM

I wouldn't have even noticed if no one told me ;x

You're in the minority

G37Sam 12-22-2012 05:34 AM

Change will always be confusing, temporarily though.

This IMO is a step in the right direction. Infiniti has a few new models planned and just couldn't find names for them that made sense. The letter Q was used on their flagship back in '89 and they figured it'd make the most sense to use.

And let's face it, this is not a Ferrari where people are buying the badge/name.

SgtGoldy 12-22-2012 05:35 AM

Of course cause you know that makes sense. I hate "Q"s... never use the **** things...

DEpointfive0 12-22-2012 06:24 AM

I don't know, I see their logic, especially with all their damn SUV's, but they could call the 550hp M the M30t, like they used to...

But losing the G35/37... Stupid move

sheps58 12-22-2012 03:25 PM

The Q50 is the G37 coupe. Any photos of the 2014 coupe.

G37Sam 12-22-2012 03:56 PM

The Q50 is the sedan actually which will be revealed in Detroit on Jan 14th.

The Q60 is the coupe/vert and won't be getting any changes so far.
