So Nissan wants to be Toyota?
Nah... I think this just means they will keep the current model as is. While the next gen Z is supposedly going to be downsized (discussed in a few other threads), the mini-Z is another car entirely -- a FR-S/BRZ competitor.

Its pure speculation at this point. The article is based on a source saying the next GT-R isnt approved yet... but they didnt mention is the R35 has 4-5 more years in it with another face lift due most likely next year.. I spoke with one of the lead engineers and the chief of global GTR marketing from japan a few months back and they both said the same thing that there is a lot of life in the current GTR and it will improve every year and thats what was currently being focused on. They said the R36 isnt even on their minds at this point.
the 4-5 year model life extension it is confirmed soa new R36 wouldnt be due until around 2018 anyway. its a stretch to say it may or may not happen at this point It would concern me if we knew the R35 was on its last year but thats not the case. and the japanese rumor mill is heavy on a face lift that will further extend the life cycle. For now i wouldnt read too much into all of this Last edited by MC; 07-28-2012 at 06:26 PM. |

Yeah the original article was from inside line, and I figured it was all speculation, even if this were true like MC said it wouldn't be until after 2018 anyways.

i cannot imagine a R36 without some sort of hybrid tech and thats going to be a ways off.. the next big thing in the GT-Rs future is a body panel face lift that includes new aero. that is supposed to debut next fall at the Tokyo Motor show... that would be our 2015 GTR the details on the 2014 should be out in less than 2 months when the GTR team makes their annual sept trip to the Ring

that's like apple marketing saying "there aren't currently plans for the iphone (X)". you know it's coming, they just aren't working on it yet

I agree with MC. There's no way Nissan is going to abandon the GT-R at this point, even with the lackluster sales figures. Other than a body panel make-over, the current GT-R is nearly mechanically perfect, so I wouldn't be surprised if they kept it up-to date with some incremental updates as usual. If they do send the GT-R to pasture, I doubt Nissan as a whole will stand idle. The Infiniti e-merge concept looks like a promising top tier halo car though.
