I thought it was well laid out, but cheap materials. But it could be a lot worse. The Camaro I test drove in 2010 literally had pieces of its interior peeling off.

Also, would you rather take your subaru powered scion to a scion/toyota dealer or your subaru powered subaru to a subaru dealer? If I ever had an issue with it, I would rather take my car to a place that knows the drivetrain, not one that's learning it. Just saying...

You brought up an interesting issue. I've always wondered this since the car came out. Not like it's our concern anyway. lol. But you have a valid point. It's powered by Subaru except for the direct injection tech by Toyota (but DI is kinda a standard tech nowadays in most high power output cars...duh Toyota). Certainly if one buys a BRZ, Subaru dealers would definitely be the choice for services. For FRS owners, it would become ambiguous.

I think it is a hot looking lil car, I'm sure it will be mod friendly. If I were on a budget it would be on my short list. HP isn't everything.

What about handling and braking?

Mean 370Z coupe skidpad g's = 0.965
Mean 370Z coupe Slalom mph = 70.53

Mean FR-S/BRZ skidpad g's = 0.88
Mean FR-S/BRZ slalom mph (note: only 2 data points) = 68.2

Didn't bother gathering 60-0 braking data, but looked like around 110' for the Z and 120' for the FR-S/BRZ.

Had 4 new FRS's come out to the last local auto-x event. One of them still didn't even have plates on it yet. Wasn't really impressed. The exterior styling is good but the wheels are too skinny for the the body. Really detracts from the aggressiveness. The interior is no where near on par with the Z. It's not bad but not great. But for a sports car I wouldn't be too worried about it. One thing I thought was cheap was the fact that it doesn't come with a center arm rest.

Lastly, it didn't do as well on the track as the hype would make you think. With stock bald tires (the tread is down the bar indicator) I was pulling the same times or better than the 4 different FRS's. Driver skill does play a big role but considering this is only my 6th auto-x event I wouldn't say I'm experienced by any means.

Speaking to the drivers after the event was over I asked their impressions. They all said the same thing; very toss-able and fun out on the course but needs more power. When I asked more about their power needs they said during the auto-x it was difficult trying to keep the revs up in order to have the power needed to come out of turns and for daily driving it definitely wasn't anything exciting. Two of them said they were happy with their purchase even though they felt it lacking in some areas while the other two were disappointed and either looking to the aftermarket or trading in for something else next year. Of note, the two that were happy with thier purchase had never owned a faster car previously compared to the FRS. The two that were unhappy had each owned faster cars before (370z, STI, WRX, 240sx SR20 swap).

Yep.

Frankly, after seeing that this car can't accelerate, brake, OR handle, I'm officially done even thinking about it until they come out with a "super sport" version.

Performance-wise it is about on par with a 7th gen Celica GT-S... that's a 12-13 year old car now, and also FF. This car is barely a step up from that, and a big step down from a boosted GT-S.

Disappointing. Glad I bought the 370Z instead of waiting for the FR-S/BRZ

It would be a nice car for starters for having a aka sport car without the spank!
Modifying one is a good solution.

I've founds it quite odd how it's been lauded in some reviews because of it's lack of grip...they say it ups the "fun factor". Sports car praised for not having great grip, etc?

Didn't one of the FRS beat the 370 in a ProSolo? This is with a drag strip and corners. The FRS comes with econo tires, of course it is slow.

crazyyankfan 08-02-2012 06:18 PM

I think the car is good. What I have issue with is those absurd fanboy owners. They think this car is the greatest sports car ever made

Haven't heard this, but details would be of interest.

As you know, I've really peed in their lemonade on this :p

I just don't get how they fail to see that Toyota literally re-wrote the rules on what defines a sports car by throwing actual performance metrics completely out the window :icon14:

Oh, except for CoG. That's one metric they have noooo problem crowing about

If they had done what Nissan had done -- pick a pricier car with good performance numbers and said, "we can do that at 1/2 the price!" it would have been a MUCH better car.

Oh well... here's hoping for a Gazoo twincharged or Subaru boosted version.

I completely agree with you on this. But I found it frustrating to reason with those fanboys on their forum. For instance, I would never say that the Z is as good as Lambo or Porsche, but those 86 fanboys would make such claim, which I consider simply retarded. However, even the stock Z can be as fast as some Maserati and Porsche regardless the precision in handling. What can the 86 do? It's basically too slow to be a real "sports car", so they can only make themselves feel better by saying it handles better than a Porsche or GT-R. Silly.

cossie1600 08-02-2012 07:59 PM

My bad, it didn't win in the ProSolo. It was actually some Street Tire class it won. I guess it doesn't mean anything.

The frs is cute, I would buy over a Honda civic si , tc , and others in its class. Not to mention rwd?! Looks like that's the best part of the car
