GT500 as first car

I was talking to a 16 year old mega rich, spoiled, kid. We have talked cars before. I asked him what his first car will be. He replied definitively, a Shelby Cobra GT500 with 650HP. My jaw nearly hit the floor. Knowing his folks, he is not BS-ing. I know he can not drive a manual, so we looked up Ford will soon be making a Shelby automatic, for this type of buyer.

Who thinks this is a good idea?

kenchan 06-26-2012 11:01 AM

a quick way to rid mustang and a tree or two.

m4a1mustang 06-26-2012 11:02 AM

There won't be an auto GT500.

Personally, I think it's probably not a great idea. I've heard of teenagers wrecking their dads' M5's. In my opinion, start a child off with a beater, something practical and less powerful until they understand basic vehicle operation.

That said, as long as the child is properly taught the dangers involved and given an understanding of how to and how not to properly operate the vehicle within safe limits, it could work out ok.

Mt Tam I am 06-26-2012 11:03 AM

I had not even finished writing poll and Ken has responded already. Wow.

Good. Especially for my town folk.

m4a1mustang 06-26-2012 11:04 AM

Tell him to get a GT-R instead.

Chteelers 06-26-2012 11:06 AM

Suppose it could be worse, he could be getting a 600 sportbike, which is far more common, much faster, and cageless. He'll probably just end up looping it off the road into a curb or a tree. Keep us posted;)

He is so on his own. His folks lavish money instead of time upon him. Mom and dad are divorced and dad got a 19 year old girlfriend. He never will get the time from dad. I told mom to get a defensive driving class for her son. She dismissed me.

If the kid were nice I'd offer to teach him myself, but to him I am not of his social class and therefore do not know anything.

Vertigo 06-26-2012 11:09 AM

Terrible idea.

Brilliant idea (/sarcasm for those that can't read internet) :stirthepot: If he's mega rich and spoiled, I'm sure daddy/mommy won't mind paying the speeding tickets, bail, and worse case scenario, funeral costs (not trying to be funny with this last one).

IF he's conservative in his driving habits, it shouldn't be a problem. Just because he's well off and pampered doesn't mean he'll wrap his car around a tree.

Sounds like natural selection at work.

Thats a bit rediculous. No kid should be operating a vehicle capable of 200ish mph. Thats crazy. Look, i know there are responsible kids out there, but giving a kid this for his first daily driver vehicle...are you fuggin kidding me? I'm all for the kid getting a really nice car, as a parent i wish i could drop coin like that on my kid and not flinch, but damn. Get him a Beamer, or a 370z, a lexus. Let the kid learn to drive first. A 640hp, 200mph car at 16yrs old? REALLY?!!! He doesn't even know the basics, hydroplaning, driving in heavy rain, snow, monitoring your mirrors at all times, the instinct of knowing what another driver MIGHT do before he does it, etc. etc. etc.

I think it would be retarded personally. Not my kid though...

m4a1mustang 06-26-2012 11:13 AM

If I was rich and had a kid I'd buy him a GT500 for his 16th birthday. I'd get a pulley for it so it's making 700whp.

Then I'd slap the valet tune on it and give the keys to him.

Such a good idea. But you would care about your kid. That is the difference.

m4a1mustang 06-26-2012 11:19 AM

I troll because I care. :icon17:

I'd also not be as reluctant to buy a shelby for a kid if the United States had more thorough and challenging driving tests. Teaching a kid a 3-pt turn is important, but the Finnish teach them to flick and hydroplane.

m4a1mustang 06-26-2012 11:21 AM

GT500 limited to 2,500 rpm. :bowrofl:

Still plenty of power for street driving, but not enough to allow him to race or show off. Trollololol :bowrofl:

Get good grades and I'll give ya an extra 500rpm, Billy! :roflpuke2:

Skorch 06-26-2012 11:23 AM

Maybe the parents don't like the kid too much.. In which case all they need to do is hand him the keys and show him how to turn the traction control off

b1adesofcha0s 06-26-2012 11:25 AM

I wouldn't do it as a first car. I'd start him off with something much slower at first. Wouldn't buy something like that till he had his license at least.

Please do it, the rarity will go up for me.

SMJane_Again 06-26-2012 12:33 PM

I could care less about what happens to him. Being a family man, it's the folks like me on the road who are now in danger of him losing control at any given moment and potentially having their lives ruined because some kid (or more to the point, the kid's parents) has more money than common sense. Someone already mentioned that there's the possibility the kid will drive conservatively and won't necessarily be a maniac on the streets, but based on the info we got from MtTam, I'm not gonna hold my breath. Fingers crossed this whole saga doesn't end in tears.

In for pics of V Shaped GT500

b1adesofcha0s 06-26-2012 01:53 PM

So if he does get it, he could learn how to drive in a straight line, but how will he learn how to turn?

Did you forget what car he was getting. There should be no turning involved.

Mt Tam I am 06-26-2012 02:08 PM

I do not fault a teenager for wanting such a vehicle. I too would have wanted it. I wanted a Pantera at his age. I got a 1965 Corvair instead. Why? My parents were not buying any car for me so I was left to my own resources.

I drove the hell out of that car and ran amuck. My 95 HP Corvair did not break traction either. I know had I had a Pantera, yet alone a 660 HP Mustang, the car would not be alive today. As for me and others, who knows.

I can mash a pedal faster than I can learn to drive a car. I know this now. At 16 I'm not so sure I would have admited this.

That was my point :p

Mustangs can't turn so this kid will only know how to drive in a straight line.

Yeah, but did you consider that Mustangs can't turn, so this kid will only be driving in a straight line?

That's because your mind was on Mustangs, and this leap to logic would require a sudden turn.
