Really thinking of a downgrade...

Right now my payments and insurance every month total over $700. I can afford it but I really don't want to any more. I bought the car the first week I got a job after college and financed almost all of it. I guess I really underestimated how much good old Uncle Sam would be taking out of my paychecks. I can still afford it but I feel like I would rather have more money to spend on other stuff.

I really can't decide what I would downgrade to so I was hoping to get some ideas. I want something sub 20k but it still has to be fast. The only cars I can think of are an STI or Evo. What else is out there?

XwChriswX 03-29-2012 11:20 PM

If you can hold out just a little while longer, have you considered the FR-S/BRZ?

sfearl1 03-29-2012 11:22 PM

To be honest, idk if you're going to find an unmolested Evo or STi under $20k. How about a slightly used 350z?

I haven't read too much about the specs to be honest. What is the expected MSRP?

FRS Is supposed to be between 24-28k, I think the BRZ will start around 28k but it will have more 'luxurious' features like leather/nav stock I'm told.

Been there, done that. I used to have a 350z and then a G35. They would feel way too sluggish compared to the 370

Depending on what year model subie he wanted, and how much modding he'd be happy with taking over. You can find most mid 2000 STi's for between 15-20k

Th3 On3 03-29-2012 11:29 PM

Yea ur gonna find a pretty beat up Evo/Sti at that price =[

What about a nice g35/350z hr?
Honda s2000
Umm idk I like the Lexus is250/350

Oh I see. Probably wouldn't make sense for me to do that. After taxes and everything I would still end up spending close to 30k, which is about what I owe on my car right now

sfearl1 03-29-2012 11:29 PM

Lol, boosted 350z?

This. I've been looking around and think I could get a an 04 or 05 STI for under 20k

Yeah I could definitely go for that! If you can find me someone that wants to let theirs go for 20k let me know! Lol

Yeah the new WRX was something I was considering. I even made a thread on here a few days ago asking how much power they can make with basic mods. Thanks for reminding me lol, I'm gonna go check prices for them

Edit: what the flying **** is this? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Subar...ht_1202wt_1021

I would go after an 07 HR Z and put a BP single turbo kit on it...

I'll keep my eyes peeled :tiphat:

I agree, get a regular WRX say 10-11, and just make it a sleeper STi. That's my plan when I can get my hands on an 03 bugeye.

04-05 wouldn't be bad either, I'd even stretch for an 06 if the price was right.

Edit: what the flying **** is this? Subaru : WRX Subaru : WRX | eBay

The base WRX came with 265awhp, STi's had 305awhp. An upgraded FMIC, larger downpipe and catback gave you those numbers. A moderately modded wrx could easily get 350awhp/tq. That's why they're so fun.

:rofl2: That's someone taking snow treads and putting them on. :rofl2: Awesome for a snow track haha! It's because they have so much TQ.

Th3 On3 03-29-2012 11:58 PM

If its an Sti I would aim do an 06-07

New wrx are beast so that's an option for sure!

I've seen a lot of 350z in the area fairly cheap with decent mileage. N then u buy ur turbo kit

XwChriswX 03-30-2012 12:04 AM

I just don't see why you'd want to downgrade from a 370 to a 350. You lose so much more than just cheaper payments...

Hence why an STi or even an Evo would be a much better choice. It's cheaper and already comes boosted. With less $$ in aftermarket parts you have a higher performing car.

sfearl1 03-30-2012 12:17 AM

I lost my first 350 in a wreck, then purchased a brand new 2011 Evo X and went stage 2 almost immediately. Look where I ended up

The performance was fun, but if OP is truly looking to "downgrade", he probably won't be happy jumping to a mid 2000's WRX from a 370. I wasn't happy with the Evo. Then again, if looks aren't high on the list... :stirthepot:

A boosted 350 would be a lateral step from a 370. Cheaper, still a Z, and fast. :happydance:

I definitely agree on the cheaper mod route. I think I only spent about $2k on stage 2 mods for my X and it was fast!

That's the evo side, not the subie side. Subies are :yum: all around.

I wouldn't consider a 350 in the same realm as a 370 on any day. Not a lateral movement for me, but that's just my :twocents: of course. Not meant to troll. :tiphat:

I must admit, I considered going to a 2011 WRX before deciding on a 370! I was sooo close to trading the Evo for one :icon17: I will probably pick one up as a DD when the Z is paid off. The wide body fenders are sexy!

Having owned both, I agree that the 370 is a step above the 350. With a turbo though, a 350 will lay down decent power. Maybe not exactly lateral, but a backward half step over there to the side kinda move :p

Well of course, with a turbo hell any car could lay down decent power. :icon17:

:inoutroflpuke: :bowrofl: Nice.

Brazilbro 03-30-2012 12:50 AM

early 2000's Vett.

babbagandu 03-30-2012 08:54 AM

Every day I go back and forth between keeping and selling. Man, why is this so hard???? Today I don't feel like selling it. Tomorrow I will probably come back to this thread and look at some of the other options listed:icon14:

Pauly 03-30-2012 08:58 AM

there are used 350's around here, 2006-2008 for 16k-20k depending.

TerribleONE 03-30-2012 09:21 AM

I would stay away from used STI's EVO's especially in that price range... :twocents:

Econ 03-30-2012 09:58 AM

As someone who was in a similiar situation to you, I would advise against it, if you can afford the payments.

I graduated a couple years ago, landed a lucarative job on wall st., bought my Z a few months later. 7 months later, I didnt feel like continuting my ~$400/month payments, and sold it.

The next time I saw a Z on the road i immediatley regreted my decision. I traded it for a freakin jeep liberty, and couldnt stand not having the Z. Ended up selling the Jeep after 3 months, and bought a 3 series coupe, costing me $600 a month.

Still not satisifed, and I am now looking for a cayman, which will likely run me another $900 a month.

I wish I could go back and keep my Z. Had i not had such favorable mods on my old Z, i'd have bought another one, however I did not want to go through the hassle of making a new one look like my old.

Th3 On3 03-30-2012 10:03 AM

Y dont u just stay with it for a bit more n once u have a year go refinance it

it's never too late! your Z looked great man

the Cayman will cost you more in the long run. bringing a new Z up to par w/ your old one will be part of the fun. you know exactly what to purchase and in what order...

I thought about it; however, at this point I think i might as well try something new, and I really like the new '13 cayman.

TerribleONE 03-30-2012 10:30 AM

your definitely not gonna want to make that payment for very long!! ^ especially on a brand new one. I do love that car though

Hah I think i'll be ok. I sold the Z about 7 months after landing my first real job. I'm making quite a bit more now, and the GF is moving in next may, so i'll be DINK'n it. (double income, no kids).

Yea, $1500 a month in car payemnts is probably stupid, but new cars are too much fun.

babbagandu 03-30-2012 03:06 PM

Well, I just posted my car on a couple Subie forums (iwsti and nasioc) to see if anyone is interested in a trade. I am basically asking for 31k for my car so they would trade their car plus somewhere around $10k. If nobody bites I will probably just keep the car

like I mentioned earlier, I would be very unhappy going back to a 350z (unless it were FI). I had one a few years back. It was a great car but the 370 blows it away in every single way imaginable. If I bought a 350 I would just feel like I was driving around in a crappy version of my 370

That is really stupid. Investing so much in rapidly depreciating assets in a recession, while relying on a dual income that isn't bound legally by marriage and can end whenever.

At LEAST buy them used, gosh. I'm assuming you own a house. If not, even worse.

Damn dude $1500 is a freakin' mortgage

Waiz 03-30-2012 03:41 PM

Sell your Z, get a reliable daily driver and wait a few years until the 370z is worth half of what it is worth today and get another one

I wish I would have done that and saved $14k in the process when I bought my Z
