Will you trade for a Toyota 86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ?

The unfortunate thing about Toyota is that they dropped anything even resembling a sports car. This new one is no exception.
You've got the Lexus LF-A on one end and these pocket-rockets on the other end and nothing in the middle like the Supra used to be.

I loved all of my Toyotas, especially the dependability. I put 152,000 miles on one car, hit a telephone poll dead-center and the engine still ran like a top.
My days of driving zippy 4 poppers is over. As much as I want to like this car, I can't see myself driving one.
That Supra, at least the last model, has pretty much reached cult status at this point. I agree, my 4-cylinder days are ovah! Unless gasoline goes to $6/gallon, of course. or unless we're talking about my motorcycles

I think its great progress in the auto world. We need more low priced quick RWD cars. Maybe once the turbo version comes out more people will like the idea of a tiny engine in a RWD sports car. But I would not sell my Z for it. Its not in the same class as the Z and more then likely never will be.

The biggest problem with the last gen Supra and even the Celicas and MR2s, was the price. They couldn't sell the things because they were so frickin' expensive. I looked at a '92 MR2 when it was new and the dealer wanted $32,000 for it. Walked away quickly.

Honestly, though, the front-end looks like a 370Z. That alone turns me off to the thing.
I suspect higher output cars will weigh more than 2600 lbs. But it will still be a lighter car than most everything else in the lower dollar range sport coupes. Styling is still off for me. Sort of one part power ranger and one part boring Toyota sedan.

And also two parts 2 different manufacturers giving styling input. The whole thing just looks...wrong.

as it sits, it has more than 13 lbs/horse
the Z carries only a little over 10 lbs/horse (mustang in the range of 8)

This thing needs more goose to be impressive IMO. Right now, I think an S2K will be leaving it around the track pretty readily...but I'll wait and see how the suspension tuning is. Adding power is easy, fixing dynamics is hard.

i liked small, underpowered, teen cars the first time they came out and were called miatas. im sry but subaru completely dropped the ball on this one. most of the subie guys dont even respect this thing. in what market does toyota, subie think they are going after with this $28k car..?

While i was pretty young (say about 6-7) at that point in life, I have done research on the MR-2 when i owned one. I think a lot of people forget (or never knew) just how much these cars cost new off the lot back in the day when they were new. If I was looking for a second car though, I think I would be looking at one of these, assuming that I could find a used one for less than 25k. But I'm definitely not trading the Z for this. (this is made on the assumption that I would be getting a second car at least a year after these are released)

So, it's viewed as a downgrade, rather than a level trade or swap.

Can't see myself going back to a four banger again. In the looks dept the 86 is just ok. The Z has the power AND looks. So, in short..a resounding NO!

Can't wait for this to come out. I'm also looking forward to the new miata thats supposed to come out in early 2013. I like the FRS, but if the miata turns out to really be 2,200 lbs then I would get the miata instead of the FRS.

Wouldn't think of trading the Z for the 86. However once the Z's paid off I'd definitely consider trading my tC for it.

I was watching the 86 for a while. I liked it a lot when they showed the black concept a few years ago. Then when they releases the newer Scion version concept, I was turned off. It was overdone and too much. I could maybe drive it if I was 20, not 30. Now that they have shots of the actual production car, it seems they have toned it back a bit too much. It's okay but not wow or anything. Also, the rear looks like a complete BMW rip off ox the z3 (I think).

When i bought the Z, I was tempted to wait for this and was afraid it might be a Z killer. I thought it would be a turbo 4 with Mazda3 like numbers but with RWD for around 25k which would have been great. Now that we know more about it, I am pretty disappointed (in it, but glad I got the Z). If I didn't have a Z and needed a zippy DD, I would consider this depending on where its price actually lands.

I would definietly not consider this an upgrade though as the thread title suggests, more like a consolation prize if the Z is out of your budget.

If I really needed rear seats and didn't want to spend much but wanted something fun to drive still, I might considering trading for this if I had to trade the Z anyway, but def not as an upgrade. Although if they litter the roads like civics and are mostly driven by women and under 21 guys, my opinion may change. Ideally, I'd rather have my girlfriend trade her civic coupe in for this, haha.
