I was watching the 86 for a while. I liked it a lot when they showed the black concept a few years ago. Then when they releases the newer Scion version concept, I was turned off. It was overdone and too much. I could maybe drive it if I was 20, not 30. Now that they have shots of the actual production car, it seems they have toned it back a bit too much. It's okay but not wow or anything. Also, the rear looks like a complete BMW rip off ox the z3 (I think).
When i bought the Z, I was tempted to wait for this and was afraid it might be a Z killer. I thought it would be a turbo 4 with Mazda3 like numbers but with RWD for around 25k which would have been great. Now that we know more about it, I am pretty disappointed (in it, but glad I got the Z). If I didn't have a Z and needed a zippy DD, I would consider this depending on where its price actually lands. I would definietly not consider this an upgrade though as the thread title suggests, more like a consolation prize if the Z is out of your budget.

If I really needed rear seats and didn't want to spend much but wanted something fun to drive still, I might considering trading for this if I had to trade the Z anyway, but def not as an upgrade. Although if they litter the roads like civics and are mostly driven by women and under 21 guys, my opinion may change. Ideally, I'd rather have my girlfriend trade her civic coupe in for this, haha.

However, the number are not there. It might be a good HS graduation present for my daughter to go to college or a DD.

That"s true, but even it handles and feels amazing, I think I would be yearning for more power. If it's anywhere in the high 20s, though, I think it will be overpriced. i also here Subie engines have a tendency to blow on the track so I'm not sure about an underpowered car designed to handle on the track, but with an engine that is unreliable on the track. FI this car though and it could be an awesome DD.

I think the collabo was awesome and toyobaru did a great job in making a well balanced RWD vehicle. But its in no way shape or form a competitor or in the same family of the type of motorsports the Z puts out. Its not an alternative. Its the kind of car you add to the stable or you dismiss altogether.

Kind of a pointless thread on a 370z site. Why would you ask people driving an attractive, fun RWD sports car if they'd trade it in for a (subjectively) worse looking, less powerful RWD car?

Because some people like to just drive, it is not always about numbers, magazine times, or even RWD. The fun of driving many cars and the experience each one gives is unique and something to enjoy.

Newer turbo I-4's in the FR-S's price range are typically not built to handle big power (ahem.. 1st and 2nd gen Mazdaspeed3s, which would likely walk all over this thing from a roll stock for stock). The small factory turbos cant handle holding high boost at high RPMs and turn a lot of that boost into waste heat or just simple fail.
Of course, you can upgrade them but it takes a decent amount of money to do it right and keep it running good for the long haul, money that you wont get back once invested in the car. I like starting with significant performance (370Z) and a more mature crowd plus then modding a bit to make it even faster. Plus, I dont like the looks of them, a bit too "high school" for me, although I probably would have loved one back in high school. ![]() If I had extra money, it would go to an old 240Z or 280Z to stay with the lineage and my money would go into restoring it and adding a nice RB motor to it.

Perhaps a better ques would be "would you trade your current DD in for the Toyota 86"? You might have gotten some diff responses. Not so much on my part because my Z is my DD.
