Im in Germany and Avis has a great rental program of just about any Porsche but the Turbo or GT2/3.
The new 911's are technical marvels but do cost alot of money. They are excellent daily drivers and Porsche has 1 very impressive sports car racing record! They are good machines. If I had the money I would have a 911-C4S and my Z.

That's really great point. Porsches have amazingly compliant suspensions that feel down right comfy on the street. They then can go to track and hang with stiffly sprung sports cars.

My one complaint about the 370 z is that it doesn't take rough roads with nearly grace of my Porsches. But it's still a fun car!

I picked 370z Nismo over used 2006 Cayman S because the Z was more of raw old school sports car feel to me than the Cayman S. It's been fun going to PCA events and beating Caymans and GT3s in autocross events. PCA guys call my car the Porsche killer. ...at least the nice guys do. Lol!

Yes I had some fun with my Lotus Esprits in the same sense. One could pull up to the track, take out lunch suit up and just go driving and be quite happy. Others would have a mechanic or 2 and need some assistance and my little 4cyl turbo would do the business for me no technical assistance required.
I am not surprised to hear you have the same luck and fun with the Nismo! I considered a Cayman prior to the purchase of the Z but loved the feel of the Z. The Cayman was a known quantity for me and I have had alot of mid engine experience. Time for something different and here in Germany, the Z is almost exotic in the sea of Caymans/Boxsters/911's here in the South of Germany. Im quite happy with the choice.

You really "donno".

They are really different and have totally different driving dynamics. A Z is front engine. A cayman is a mid engine. The C2 is a rear engine.

Try looking past printed 0-60, 1/4 mile, HP/TQ. You need to drive a Porsche to understand why some people are willing to pay the huge premium to drive them. Road feel, braking, steering feel, balance, driver inspired confidence, refinement it's all there.

There are a few exceptions like early 997.1 and Caymans with oil starvation and oil seal failures. For the most part they hold up to harder then normal use better then most cars. Not too many cars you can drive hard on a track with not much to modified.

A Z is a great car for it's price point but not a Porsche. A Porsche offers near supercar performance and can be driven as a daily driver due to it's refinement. Most people who question a P-Car have never actually driven one or is not financially ready to buy one yet.

GT-R is super deal, offers super performance that is superior to most Porsche models, but not nearly as refined as a daily driver as a Porsche. I can understand putting up with all the transmission noises and stiff suspension though. The GT-R is really one of those super great cars at any price.

Like M4A1,

If I buy a Porsche, its because its a Porsche. And its HAS TO BE a 911. Hell I had Porsche posters on my wall as a kid. It also has become a symbol to me. When I no longer have a mortgage, retire, and hopefully be done with kids and start working on grandkids, I plan on driving a 911 from retirement until my death. Just how I always have seen it.

Of course it could be that Porsche is awesome because Germany hasn't outlawed the use of unicorn blood, which we all know works better with rear-engined cars anyway! P-Car+unicorn blood=FTW!

That's why they call the 911 the midlife crisis car

I think if you're going to track a car, your best bet is to step down a price range or two from what you think you can afford anyways. If you're in a money situation to afford daily driving a Porsche, you're in about the right money situation to do serious amateur racing in a Z and not get killed on it financially. If you can afford to really race a Porsche on your own dime, you're getting pretty far up there in the financial hierarchy of the world .

Owned a boxster. Driven a C2 a few times. Yes they are refined and the engineering is great. I just don't know about the price point vs. the sexiness of the car. IMO it's pretty plain jane unless you step it up to a GTwhatever series but then the price point climbs past what a typical 911 owner can afford as well I guess. Or maybe not. Maybe they just don't want the "flash" of a GT3/2. Me... I'll take the flash

The regular 911s are about balance. They balance power, luxury, flash, etc. They are just classy.

And you can get one of about 500 different models, so one is bound to tickle your fancy.

I suppose a CS with the optional aero kit in a dark blue would tickle my fancy

I am not sure if it's been discussed in this thread or not, but the 2012 CS posted a 7 minute 40 second lap at the Nurburgring. That's pretty respectable.

I am lusting after one in red. With the options I want I get an MSRP of $115k. Not really sure I want to spend that on a car at the moment.
