Very little body lean, that thing corners flat. I'm no expert on the Ring but that looked like a very smooth, drama free lap. No surprise, that's a quick car.

Aidan 10-06-2011 05:47 PM

Unreal time

cossie1600 10-06-2011 06:38 PM

From the words of James May

"I may be alone in this, but I reckon that a lot of performance cars I drive lack proper feel. I blame the Nürburgring. Being able to claim that your daily driver holds a production car lap record somewhere in Germany is a good boast down the pub for the feeble minded, and the map of the place that Aston Martin embroidered on the center console of the N400 might make its owners feel superior, but it's all nonsense."

m4a1mustang 10-06-2011 06:40 PM

Nice!

Nice time by the Camaro, but even crazier than that is the fact there's at least 75 cars that have now gone under the 8:00 mark at the Nordschliefe. Only a few years ago 8 was the magic number. As an equal opportunity car enthusiast, I love the progression.

:iagree:

Any car under 8 minutes on The Ring is hella fast. Certainly faster than you could ever drive on the street!

I still love to see them knocking these times down on increasingly more accessible cars.

Red__Zed 10-07-2011 12:11 PM

Crazy. Very beast time.

Armonster 10-07-2011 01:03 PM

I don't really understand the car from a marketing perspective (in light of the vette), but the time/video is very impressive.

Well, it's not 8 minutes, but still...a cargo-van can do the 'ring in 10.

Then try looking at it in light of the GT500.

m4a1mustang 10-07-2011 02:35 PM

I thought it was more like 10 minutes. I remember... Jeremey Clarkson was riding with Sabine in the transit van and they were trying to do a sub 10 minute lap and barely missed out on it. Though I might be thinking the wrong thing.

Speaking of the GT500, there is a rumor going around that Ford's 2013 GT500 test mule did it in the 7:34 area. Like I said, just a rumor... hasn't been confirmed or denied by Ford yet.

But Ford has no car above the Mustang currently, where GM does.
I honestly would take a Corvette any day of the week over the ZL1.

There is a market, though, that prefers a car like the Camaro/Mustang over a 2-seater like the Corvette. So that's where the ZL1/GT500 fits.

The 'rumor' on time has not been confirmed but someone who is on the team said (after the ZL1 time was posted) they are already below the time and still have some more room.

So would I, but GM is trying to compete with Ford on EVERY level. Are you trying to argue that the ZL1 is NOT the answer to the GT500?

that market has kids and a wife and doesn't deserve a fast car. :roflpuke2::roflpuke2:

I agree with that, not everyone can have a 2 seat car but still just buying a 50k Camaro/Mustang.

I am highly doubting a 3800# car with chicken-legs is within a dozen seconds of the Z06 Z07 and the GT-R and "regular" Viper. I am just not seeing it. If that is fact....wow. Lets see Ford publish it :)

An interesting thing that we need to note about Nurburging times is that, well, they don't really tell us all that much.

Think about it.

One lap of the Nurburgring is LONG. There are a lot of places to make mistakes, so even for the best drivers it's very difficult to get the "perfect" lap. I would say it is probably fair to assume that a great driver leaves at least a few seconds on the table even on their best lap. So if we are looking at a car that runs 7:40 and another that runds 7:35... they are in effect the same thing.

Still pretty damn cool to see what numbers they can put down, though.

well, if a 4100 lb. car can run a 7:41, I think a 3800 lb. car with more power can run a bit faster.

Like I said, it's rumor at this point. Ford won't publish anything until they make an official announcement on the car, so it's all speculation.

The only thing confirmed for the 2013 GT500 is a 5.8L supercharged V8.

Exactly and there is no 'rules' to these times, no official start point or anything.
I think it is a great tool to compare cars but we all saw the Nissan/Porsche debate back when the R35 GT-R first launched.

And some body redesign parts, no clue if that will help with aero or not.

I get the GT500 comparison, but I never really understood the point of that car either. I guess there is a market for it though.

Q: What's the point?

A: Because this is America, god damnit!

:icon17:

Why don't we all drive the cheapest, most fuel efficient cars we can? Because this is America, god damnit! :usa:

How fast does a Toyota iQ run the Nring?

( Click to show/hide )
It started its lap last fall and still hasn't made it round. :ugh2:

That would be a fun race. All of us in Toyota iQs for a one lap race around the Nurburgring. :icon17:

It'd be a longer race (in time) than the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring.
