They're relatively common in the places I've lived. Heaviest credit card I've ever seen.

Yep, I see them used here in NOVA every now and then. At the Sunday car shows when we are all in line at the Starbucks some of the guys driving the more expensive cars pay with their AMEX black.

Maybe because you live in VA and I live in Louisiana, lol. Yes, they do have a nice heft to them. They feel as impressive as they are. Except the bastard that used his at my restaurant didn't tip a dime.

Two best ways to drop people's jaws while paying: Amex black card, and paying for a car in cash. Literally. It's adds to the effect if you pull the bills from your crotch.
