Saw this on Motor Trend today. A Z06 with Z07 options package laps the Ring with a time just 3 seconds behind the ZR1. Z06 win or ZR1 fail?

Z06 win and definitely not a ZR1 fail. The Z06 with the Z07 package is basically a lighter ZR1 with a bit less power. But these cars are to the point where the only way to really get them to go around the track quicker is to start adding downforce.

/\ if you start adding significantly more downforce, you'll need to increase hp proportionately to account for it, otherwise, top speed will suffer, esp on big fast tracks like the 'ring that have very long straights.

You'll cut your top speed, but in the scheme of things you'll gain much more because of the sheer amount of corners. Plus on the 'Ring there aren't that many real straights where you'd suffer from added drag. I can think of less than a handful. Most of the "straights" on the track have some corners where a bit of extra downforce would probably help.
