Your quote "Its great for straight line red light to next red light but it seriously lacks Supercar handling. Its great for throwing around curves and fishtailing like the Bandit. And now they want to add more power to it when the power it has now cant be applied to the ground?" is obviously unfounded and misinformed. I'm sorry you can't see that. Don't take my word for it....

"Regardless, with the time recorded the 2011 shelby GT500 Mustang beats some fairly elite company with far larger pricetags, such as the Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI, the Ford GT supercar, Dodge Viper SRT-10 and the Porsche 997 GT3 – to name a few."

First, in the words of great men everywhere "you can never have too much power"
Second, I truly believe that if the shelby and the Z were the same price everyone would have bought the Shelby.

My opinion is the Mustang GT500 is a brute power monster and not a Supercar. Much like the Viper. Just because it made it around VIR quicker than some other cars does not mean that it did with any sort of prowess. For all I know the Mustangs time consisted of white knockle ragged edge driving while the Ford GT was composed and controlled around the track. My guess would be whoever drove any of those cars around VIR would not pick the GT500 as their first choice.

I am not saying that the GT500 isnt a badass car, I just dont think it will ever be a "supercar"

Your logic doesn't make sense. So in order to be considered a supercar, it has to have some sort of artistic prowess? Huh?

Have you ever seen the lap videos of the Zonda R or a ZR1? Or, hell, a SLS AMG? They are hardly composed cars. They look as if they are succeeding by brute force and the sheer will of the driver.

Yet, they are certainly supercars. I mean, I could understand if you said it wasn't a supercar because of its price or luxury or exclusivity, but not how composed it is on the track.

I don't think this is the case. After all, the 5.0 is cheaper than the Z and it is a more capable track machine, yet the Z still sells. You could also buy a base Vette for the price of a top-range Z.

What a supercar should be:

1. Expensive high end car
2. it must be very fast
3. sporting handling to match the speed and power
4. it should be a refined and exodic design
5. price should be of an amount respective to the car's limited nature
6. marketed by automakers to be unusual
7. limited production specials from an "elite" automaker
8. models that appeal to "hardcore enthusiasts" from manufacturers on the fringe of the car industry

I wouldnt put the Shelby or GTR in "supercar" catigory. Im not saying that they cant keep up with some supercars but I will argue that with parked next to a true supercar anyone can tell the difference.

A supercar is a car that people buy for status. I come from a 3rd world country and having a car that is automatic, has air condition, and has windows is considered a supercar because it gives you status that says "Look at me, I'm better off than the majority of the population." Owning a Ford Mustang there is an example.

Everytime we talk about my Z she states how good of a wife she is for letting me a father of 3 have a 2 seat car. So what do I say? "The Shelby has 4 seats!" she wasn't amused. She asked me why I didn't get it to begin with. I thought about the Shelby, but in the end I'm just too cheap to but a $55k car. Maybe when I'm old and retired, but not now.
I think the GT500 is just a few points shy of greatness.

-155mph speed limiter is kinda lame
-nearly 30# 2-piece driveshaft? Fail
-They STILL have transmission issues
-285's out back when they lay down 485 to the tires!?
-Solid rear-axle and no Fays setup?

However, in its defense...

-485whp!!!
-Fully forged and nearly bulletproof motor!
-Very nice interior/NAV setup!
-RECARO's!!!

Wrong. There are tons of mustangs, so I agree on that point. However, Viper production is EXTREMELY low. What is it, 20-25K cars produced...since 1992? It is a rare car, and it has the power and handling to land it among the best. True supercar.

That doesn't end. I find myself wondering what I will trade the Z06 in on. So far a Z06/Z07 last-year C6Z and a '10 Last Edition Viper are the two I am looking at. The GT-R? I just don't trust it enough to want to own one, as whatever I buy next I am going to hold onto for a while until I get a house, etc. GT-R would be like a 300ZX. Fun until warranty was gone. Then a nightmare.

I like the GT-R but I would never spend a dime on one (unless Lou Fusz hooks me up with a killer deal on a 2012), it's just not a car I have any interest in owning. Would I like to drive one? Hell yes. Own... no.

I think I might end up keeping this Mustang for a while because it's a nearly limitless platform for modding, but I want to add something to the stable and soon.

Criteria: Two doors, no roof, manual transmission, great handling, not slow, yellow.

But really, I'm looking at possibly picking up an S2000 for some drop-top fun, or maybe even a Miata... I want those doors.

I'm obsessed right now with what my next DD will be, and at worst, that decision is still 8 months away. If I'm responsible, the decision is still years away.

Also steve, I would rule out the s2000. I have heard they have awful steering feel, and are girly cars.

I've actually heard they don't even have a steering wheel at all. Only the drivers with the highest confidence can control one of those.
