High gas prices=weird car prices

I went to the dealer to check out a new 335D. I have always been a fan of diesel, so I just wanted to see how good the car is. I am not going to get into the 335D. What I do want to bring up is how weird the trade in prices are now on the Prius given the $4/gallon gas prices. I bought my 2010 Prius new for I think $23K with no sales tax. I have 39K miles on it and it is about 20 months old. Without any negotiation, they were going to give me $21K for it. I nearly poop in my pants when I heard it. The funny thing is that I could have gotten the same car new for $20800 plus tax just in December. It's amazing how the crazy used car dealers drove up the price of the vehicle.

On another note. I bought my 2009 base sports new about 13 months ago for $29K. At 9800 miles, they were willing to give me $24500.

Not really all that odd. Now is the time to buy performance cars.

Yup! The last time this happened, Craigslist had ads for $5k Geo Metros and $10k Honda CRXs. :)

That is a great trade in price on the Prius, although not surprising. The high trade in for the Z is surprising, however. Maybe the Prius is investment worthy these days!

production is greatly reduced for the Prius. I read an article where one california dealer sold 30 per month and only had 10 on the lot. with the lost production and high gas prices, now is the perfect time to get rid of it if you want to make money on a car.

25k is about all I'd pay for a used 2009 base + sport. I'd bet anything the dealership will have it marked around 29-30k.

If my car was older (let say 100K miles on it), then I would do it. Many people did it when Katrina hit and made out on it. Plus, I would have to pry the keys out of my wife's dead body if I want to sell the Prius since that is our favorite car. Maybe I will get lucky and be able to buy the new plug in Prius as a daily driver.

I still don't get why people would pay more for a used car than a new one, I guess they really want it badly. I mean how much are you going to use in gas in a month or two while you wait?

Heck, even the Cube my mom and my aunt both got went up from 13600 to 14700!!

I am scared to see what my Saab 9-7x is worth at this point, yuck...

Sports package isn't worth anything when you trade it in, it's almost consider an accessory...
