Mitsubishi axed the Evo

Pretty heartening news for car enthusiasts everywhere.

Quote:

When you think of Mitsubishi, what do you think of? Chances are, one of the first things that runs through your mind when Mitsubishi gets a mention, is the turbocharged, AWD, rally-car-for-the-road Lancer Evolution series. For decades now, the Evo has provided Mitsu with some desperately-needed sense of identity, although it never really reflected a brand philosophy the way Subaru’s WRX/STI series did for its AWD lineup. And now, it seems, Mitsubishi is done trying to build a brand on a rally replica. Autocar‘s Matt Prior recently sat down with Motsu’s global product director Gayu Eusegi, and he heard some rather jarring news:

The Lancer Evolution X, Eusegi told me, will be the last Evo. “There is still a demand [for the car],” he said, “but we must stop.” Eyebrow up.

“Our influence now is EV technology,” Eusegi said, adding that the decision was a “policy change”.

It seems Mitsubishi, which is going to introduce eight full electric or hybrid cars by 2015, has decided its image is about lowering CO2, not making lurid replicas of rally cars that don’t go top-level rallying any more.

Eusegi said that customers would find it “easier to understand” what Mitsubishi was about if it was no longer in this motorsport-inspired market.

Eusegi goes on to apparently confirm that the Evo X will be the last of the line, until such time as rally racing goes electric. Which means that if you’ve always wanted to buy a new Evo, you might want to think about picking one up soon. After all, an EV-heavy strategy may not be the silver bullet for Mitsubishi, but the Lancer Evolution has had its chance at playing halo. Change can be painful, but it is the only constant… and Mitsu has to evolve or die. Even if that means the Evolution dies first.

I am hurting a bit, I wanted one of those.....

Red370 03-02-2011 08:23 PM

as an avid DSM lover, i'd love to see a rebirth of the turbo Eclipse.

Gunzero 03-02-2011 08:27 PM

Fck

crash1369 03-02-2011 10:20 PM

I would rather see something along the lines of the 3000 gt again, their new found dedication to electric cars could even be an option.

In theory an electric car could out perform an internal combustion powered one, but obviously they've all been designed as gutless economy cars to date though and I don't see that changing

m4a1mustang 03-02-2011 10:23 PM

Well that stinks.

Waiz 03-02-2011 10:38 PM

Electric powered Evo, sign me up!

Brazilbro 03-02-2011 10:53 PM

I miss my Evo 8 a lot. I'm always looking to pick up one for cheap but haven't found the right one yet.. I need to pick up a Evo 9 RS. sounds like it will pull a pretty penny in the future.

Jordo! 03-03-2011 05:31 AM

Huh. So Mitsu is going Toyota and Toyota is going Nissan.

Well there ya go -- Toyota needs to offer a turbo model of the FT-86 next year. Whole new potential consumer base just opened up.

Mitsubishi to ditch the Evo for EVs - Confidential

Word on some of the suby boards is that the STI may not make it past 2014-2015. With all manufactures going to hybrid or electronic tech it makes you wonder how much longer sports cars in general will be around.

Red370 03-03-2011 01:40 PM

Am I the only one hopeful of an Eclipse revival? I remember lusting after the GSX as a kid, I'd love to see another awd turbo sport coupe from Mitsu.

i mean, c'mon the car was hot, and it was WAAAY ahead of its time.

I was thinking that too, but didn't know if anyone was aware of the "green" Porsches :D

Cmike2780 03-03-2011 02:21 PM

So sad to see it go, but chances are Mitsubishi won't survive without a sporty car in the line up. Boring utilitarian types tend to go into obscurity rather quickly. Oldsmobile, Isuzu, Plymouth etc... decided to stay with lack luster, average looking cars. Every major manufacturer knows this, from Toyota develpoing the FT-86 to Honda with its meager SI & CR-Z. It's kind of stupid having a rally inspired car in production and no longer having rally team. Who knows, maybe this will open up a niche market for shops turning ordinary Lancers in Evo's. I don't think they'll kill off the Lancer anytime soon.

Nismoracer 03-04-2011 01:48 AM

This is the last year for the Eclipse as well.

not really... the same can be said for any import.. Have you seen the guy with the blue super-turbocharged 350z?

I had a 2g GSX putting down ~330awhp with little money into it..
I also had a 3g GS(T)... it was going to be a GSX but I got poor.. lol
but even still it was putting down 380whp...
they aren't bad...

then I upgraded to a TT 300zx :)

Demon Z 03-05-2011 10:46 PM

Exciting cars bring people into showrooms whether they can afford them or not. If my local Nissan dealership had a GT-R you can bet your a$$ I'd be there on a regular basis. They're like hen's teeth in these parts. Without the Evo, Mitsu's in trouble, at least in this country.

mick 03-05-2011 10:50 PM

someone has to win the battle, like blu-ray defeating hd dvd.
i am glad that subaru won it. at least, it would make MT WRX, unlike mitsubishi for the evo.

WTF are you talking about? Subaru didn't win a damn thing. Evos have always pwnt STIs.

Mitsubishi would be retarded to drop the Evolution. I don't think it will happen any time soon.

win = subaru will still continue to make the wrx
whereas mitsubishi will stop making the evo.

Both of you are failing to see my point.

Also, as per Mitsu, the Evo getting the axe is nothing but a rumor.

I'm obviously kidding just because xdes had one!

My neighbor had a GS-T in college and it was a beast. Upgraded snails, and engine mods = made me piss my pants during a drive-along :icon18:

it doesn't sound like a rumor because that came directly from the global product director. So you are the one who failed to see the point

Go spend some time on EvoM (which I do plenty of)... you'll find more info on there.

The word, as of right now, is the Evo might be taking a different direction (be it electric, hybrid, etc.) depending on market/demand. It won't be getting the axe.

Agree! im not against the performance of XI. only then there were some body tweaks and some common thing were ommited from it including the power seats and the anti lock brakes.

mjd77 10-22-2011 04:35 PM

Even though sports car enthusiasts are always a small % of a customer base, these companies aren't doing themselves any favors by kicking them to the curb. (see Honda, Mazda, and a long time ago,...Toyota)

_ace_ 10-22-2011 11:05 PM

I've never been convinced Mitsubishi (auto) is much more than a tax shelter for the parent company.

I understand the need for a new direction, but if you actually care about selling cars, why kill the only halo cars you have?
