2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 V6 - Road Test - Auto Reviews - Car and Driver Sorry but sexy lines and big motor don't make a sports car. At least to enthusiasts. Anyone who has spent time in Korea will understand the culture there just isn't tuned into sports car segment. They failed on balance and suspension on this car. Its also over a foot longer than our big phat Z,s with wheel base that is nearly a foot longer as well. It may be a cheap Lexus beater but comes no where close to a Z for us true enthusiast drivers. |

If hyundai could fit their 4.6 or 5.0 V8 into the coupe they would sell so many more of them, it would be the korean version of the mustang GT.

No I use my experience from spending time around Hyundai manufacturing and in Korea in general. I'm not saying it's a bad car it's just not a sports car. I trust my understanding of sports car engineering and many years of driving and developing sports racing cars from Nissan, Mazda and Porsche. Sorry this bloated under suspended sedan based car isn't anything close to Z , rx8 or Porsche cayman. ......Continue with the delusions please.

I don't think that would be the case. Likely selling for around $40k if they did that. A better option for them would be a more powerful V6.

Again, they didnt make a true enthusiastic sports car so to try and compare it as one is the mistake. What if the comparison said, "IS the 370z as everyday as the genesis coupe??" then the z would look bad. Hyundai didnt try to capture the true enthusiast market. So they didnt build one. But again they didnt build a bad car if you look at the genesis coupe for what it was built for. Quote:
going back to the Hyundai, they decided they wanted a larger market share. Thats all it really is, 2 cars built for 2 different purposes, yet compared against each other as if one is trying to be exactly like the other. |

Just look at difference in quality of parts and front suspension design. again as a non enthusiast car it packs lots of features and fairly good power to weight ratio but all steel front strut suspension falls short of true sports cars.

Im saying its not meant to be a true sports car. Hyundai didnt want that. (i was in a few focus groups actually back when they were designing it) But im also saying its not as bad as people here are saying, its a pretty darn good car. Its just not a true sports car cus it wasnt meant to be, so comparing it to one that is, is the problem. and then those people (not you) who are like "buahaha its a hyundai" well their just kinda dumb. |

I'm just saying to educated sportscar enthusiast the Hyundai is not much of a consideration. Pure and simple. And yes Hyundai makes it and it's not a viable sports car for most true enthusiast. So we enthusiasts might just say it's a Hyundai blah blah blah it's not a true sports car and have a point.
For someone looking for a sexy commuter it's great! |

Well after living in Korea for almost a year I can say that the society out here is very homogenous. So I wouldn't expect a sports car from any of their brands for the next five or so years. Their culture just isn't into it yet.
I mean look at Hyosung motorcycles and everything else Korean...they all fall into the decent alternative category. There's no soul or passion in the products they build just functionality. |

I have read all the thread and everyone makes some very good points..
I think i even forgot how this thread got started. But to me bottom line Does the Hyundai line offer any sports car (shakes head) that can compete with the 370 as of this moment and imo the answer is no.......... And that is not saying they do not make good sporty looking cars.... sporty looking being the key here............... Dropping a V8 into a sleek body doesn't cut it......................... |

The Gen Coupe is not a sports car and they don't advertise it as one.
It's a sports sedan which is a different category then a sports car. It competes more with the G37. & yes I know the G37 is more expensive and nicer inside, blah blah blah I drove the Gen Coupe with the 6cyl, it's a nice comfortable car with some power. It would make a great every day driver and a great car at that price point. |

Great post shamu +rep I think even if hyundai had all the intentions in the world to make a car to directly compete with the 370Z, they would still fall short. They are way behind and have allot to learn...that is unless...they kidnap some engineers from a true sports car breeder company

This thread has digressed into borderline trolling so I am heading out. If it ends up being faster in the 1/4 and on the track (possible in the 1/4 although I would bet not, less likely on a track) then I think there will be some foot-in-mouth syndrome going around.
I love my Z too and would not swap for a Genesis Coupe, but it does not mean they could never be faster.

Their diesel motors are quite amazing too, unfortunately they are mostly only in China.. (they didnt kidnap any diesel engineer's to make those) Their new hybrid in the sonata is the first to use lithium polymer application.. its actually a really good system and again, they didn't kidnap people. The thing is. Hyundai has the resources, money and technology to make a reallly good sports car. I just think they want to concentrate on a different market. Just like, toyota could do it, honda could do it, nissan does it etc. But honda and toyota don't, they want to concentrate on a different market. again, I think they could do it, but.. if they assign a smaller budget to it than they could, i'd be here doing what '10anamoly said "foot in mouth" |
